getting new wheels and tires, already mounted, just curious the best way to prep them prior to placing on my vehicle. i was thinking first wash them, then seal the wheels. i was going to layer the sealant, i have poorboys wheel sealant btw. was wondering how long to wait between coats if at all. is 3 coats any better than 2? additionally, i was going to dress the tires too. is it necessary to clay brand new wheels? your thoughts, insight would be appreciated. ard
you shouldn't need to clay them, My thought is one layer of sealant is enough, I don't think there is that much of an advantage of adding more than one layer. Thats just me. YOu will definitely want to wash them first as the tire shop probably used tire soap to mount them
I usually do a thorough cleaning and seal every time I rotate my tires every 5000 miles. Usually 1 application is all I do for my wheels.
wash and seal it is then. i think i'll still do 2 coats of sealant. more so for coverage than anything else. in case i miss some spots with the first coat. thx for the quick response. additionally, i am currently using pb bnb for a tire dressing, but when that finishes, was thinking cg vrp. will that be a lil bit shinier than the bnb? also, wanted to use something like 303 or silkshine for exterior trim. would vrp be too shiny? pics would be awesome. thx again, ard
it's timely you brought that up right now. I just finished changing over my summer wheels/tires to my winter ones. We have had a week in the high 60's and low 70's but the weather is changing tonight. What I did is apply a layer of DG 105 to my winter ones (barrels included) and washed and sealed my summer ones and (sadly) put them away. I've never used the other products you suggested although I use 303 a lot, but mostly on the inside. It looks good on exterior trim, but I don't think you get the longevity out of it.
I use PB's BNB and it's pretty good. I think I do have some CG VRP but I haven't tested them on my tires yet. I believe if you do a second application with BNB you might be able to get a shinier look. As far as your exterior trim goes, I usually use Black WoW or PB's Trim restorer even though I have 303 AP.
They are both polymer sealants, but one has much better durability (Zaino) Yu will also get a longer useful 'life' from your tyres by using a water-based tyre dressing (unfortunetly this type of dressing don't last very long though) but then a tyre dressing is less expensive than a new set of tyres ...
