New Tires not absorbing tire dressing

    yo,

I got some new tires on Thursday. After 36K miles I have just switched to Continental ContiExtremeContact DWS tires, same size as OEM tires (205/50ZR17).

Anyways, I cleaned them up with some AG Custom Wheel Cleaner and agitation with a SV Wheel Brush last Friday afternoon during my normal wheel cleaning routine. Tires came out clean .

Went to put on dressing tonight, PB Bold 'N Bright 1:1. Sprayed on Uber Small Tire Sponge and spread as per normal, went around all four tires. The dressing went on very wet as usual but once it dried it looked like it almost completely evaporated. So I went back and re-applied to all four tires and almost no difference.

I let it sit for an hour or two, buffed the tires down, and then applied GI Tire Gloss and basically the same result. The tires look totally matte as if there is almost no dressing on them.

    What's going on?

    Thanks,
    Emile

I've had this same thing happen to me too before on a set of Nitto's. Basically for me after not long the tires started cooperating with my go to tire shine (Autoglym Tyre Dressing) but honestly I really do not get it either... Did you really scrub at the tires? Sometimes tire shops like to spritzed on some cheap tire stuff and it takes a bit to get it off... just what I've noticed.

Try scrubbing them with a fender brush and some APC then reapply your dressing of choice.

it prob still has some tire protection mold on it. Im sure tire dressing works on it as tire dressing works on my DWSes or the shop sprayed some stuff on it (i got my DWSes back with some white streaks of liquid)

Okay thanks guys, I will try a stronger cleaner and a stiffer brush next week-end. I guess I just have to get rid of the tire's built-in protection.

Why would you want to do that? Wouldn't it be better to preserve the built in protection?

No because the tires look really ugly right now. The sidewalks look faded and splotches of gray and white everywhere. I'd rather dress them myself so the tires look perfect.

I just cleaned the wheels and tires with P21S Gel and agitated with various brushes, and then hit them once more with Zep Citrus 3:1. I'll take a picture and post up....it looks like last week's application of Bold n Bright did penetrate into the rubber but not enough that the tires were looking dressed.

the protection is like a mold to prevent the rubber from aging/etc so it needs and will come off especially at the treads else it wont grip properly

Did that help get the protection/shop gunk off?

Griot's Garage makes a product called Rubber Prep, that works extremely well in removing anything that is on the tire. It leaves the tires looking really fresh.

These wheels were preped first with Griot's Garage Rubber Prep, then dressed with Swissvax Pheu

It helped and the sidewalls are getting clean but not 100% yet. It may take another week or two (and another few hits of wheel cleaner/degreaser).

autoobsessed, I've seen that product on the Griot's website. For the time being I will keep hitting it with PB Bold n Bright after each wash since it has cleaners in it and should help out even more. I'll post up a picture tomorrow of the current state of the tire sidewalls.

seems like an interesting product. never heard of it before. does it work well for prepping plastic exterior trim etc?

I personally have not used it for that, but the description of the product does indicate that it can be used for trim as well. The Griot's Garage Rubber Cleaner may be a better choice depending on how dirty/stained the trim is. These two rubber products are pretty new for them.

I'm going to have to try some Griot's products ... looks like its a good product based on the results your showing
