First, I want to say what a great forum this is. ALOT of info and great posts.:worship2: Ok I'm getting a new care next week and I know it's been sitting in and out for about six months. It was in the dealers showroom for the last two months. It's grey (silver reflex from VW) and I want to treat it good right from the start. (btw it's not a rental, so even more reasons...). Here's what I was thinking: 1. Clean with DG 901 2. Clean with Dawn 3. Clay with yellow Riccardo (ONR for lub) 4. Wash - with what after clay ? 5. DG 601 6. DG 105 7. I heard DG 111 here or at very last step realy shines... 8. CG 50/50 wax till my eyes and arms hurt... 9. Again, DG 111 here ??? What do you guys think ? I will be doing everything by hand unless I get convinced to buy a PC. Thanx for all your help !!!
bro, don't use dawn.. Please don't. I would say emphasize on the claying because like you said its been going around from place to place. Transportation of vehicles causes a lot of grime/dust build up in the paint. They are transported and rail dust, depree from the air and other particles hit the paint and since there really isn't a LSP on these.. They actually stick. What I would do is degrease the car, then wash it with a car wash soap (like the DG 901). Clay it, then see how the paint looks. If its clean and without any swirls.. Go ahead and apply your favorite LSP, otherwise bring out the PC (But learn how to use the PC first).
Hey welcome to the forum! Please dont clean with Dawn, it is made for washing dishes not cleaning cars. I would just wash with a good soap maybe add some APC or a citrus cleaner (Like ZEP citrus cleaner from Home Depot) to strip any wax they may of put on it. Then clay, clean with some car wash, then go on with your plan. Make sure you let the DG cure, 12-24 hrs before putting on the 50/50.
Having worked in a dealership, they put a type of wax that can be removed by being blown on by an asmatic. Also! If you're going to get the Zep citrus degreaser, use a foam gun.
Yeah there wax is a joke but might as well just to make sure anything they did put on it is gone or if any transportation glue from the plastic protection they put on is somewhere. I know VW says to use 3m wax if I remember the TSB correctly, but that is just a suggestion so is to clay the car if during prep there seems to be rough finish. Like that ever happens, doing a full PDI, ha. You can get a cheap foam gun if you dont wanna pull the trigger on a real one from Target, but I would suggest a real foam hun. Not only do they work great but SOO much fun to play with.
Welcome...:thumb:...:welcomewagon::welcome: :welcome2: As said above A good place for the dawn is in the kitchen...:thumb:
Ok Ok I will NOT use dawn... I dont have a foam gun yet and before working with a PC on my car I will practice on my truck at work. Reason I wanted to use dawn was for leaving a bare surface for claying. I will try a little APC in DG 901. Thanks for the fast replys guys !!! *btw do you use something on top of the wax?
Not really, I do not put on anything after wax. Some like to put a QD, but I rather not and just QD later down the road such as after the next wash.
Seems like a bit of overkill IMO. You could top the 105 with 5050 and that'd be sufficient for me. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out! Welcome to the boards! :thumb:
Although using Dawn probably won't harm anything, just use a bit more (twice as much) soap as you normally would so it's nice and strong.
The reason to stay away from Dawn is that it will fade your trim. Do not put a sealant over a wax. You should leave the 111 on for a day to let it cure and then decide whether or not you even want to bother with a wax. I'm rare on this forum in that I don't use waxes..just sealants now. Try for yourself.
The main thing I have against dawn other than fading trim over time is that it takes alot of time to rinse clean sometimes. Make sure you let the sealant cure before putting a wax on it, you may or may not decide to wax. Just have to do it by looks, if you like the looks of the sealant itself leave it be, if you wax the hood and dont see much a difference then dont worry about waxing the car with 50/50.
