In an effort to reduce emissions and improve fuel-economy ultra premium brand Bentley is looking to downsize with the introduction of an all-new V8 engine.

As previously reported, Bentley is looking to sister brand Audi to co-develop a new direct-injection 4.0 liter V8 engine to be used in the Continental GT and future Audi performance models. Bentley says the new 4.0 liter direct-injection V8 will cut CO2 emission on the Continental GT model by a substantial 40 percent.

Latest reports reveal the new V8 unit will be available in two versions. According to Autocar, the first version will have a single turbocharger producing 415 bhp (309 kW / 420 PS). The second version will be twin-turbocharged unit making 555 bhp (413 kW / 563 PS) - in line with Bentley's target output of at least 100 bhp per liter.

The 4.0 liter V8 engine will debut in the Bentley Continental GT near the end 2011.

Meanwhile, Autocar also reports that 2011 production for the Mulsanne is already reserved. The Arnage successor which starts at £220,000 is powered by a 6.75-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 505 bhp (377 kW / 512 PS) and 752 lb-ft (1020 Nm) of torque.

    that's a shame.

all the V12s just went up in value.

I'm sorry, fuel economy be damned, an ultra premium luxury car needs two inherently perfectly balanced inline 6s slammed together...

While this is still going to be a phenomenal engine and an animal at that, its a shame all this has to be done at efficiency expense. You buy these cars for the single purpose of them being outrageous in every sense, in a good way, and they are reducing that. As much as we need to be conscious about fuel, some things should just remain the same like V12's

As long as theres no decrease in power and it doesnt sound like a Prius I am all for smaller and more fuel efficent engines.

I agree, if you have one of these, you are not concerned about fuel economy, or the gas guzzler tax.

Maybe some rich hippie might like it. LOL.

Still a sick car either way.

When you have 3.8litre flat 6 porsche turbos literally annihilating V12 SL65 Benzes and V12 Ferrari 599's .... It should tell you something.

Oh yea and the new Porsche turbo S gets 25mpg....10-15 more MPG than the above V12 cars

my next car is going to be a diesel. I want to drive it 300k. I'm thinking about a Ram with a Cummings Diesel

Turbos are the way to go, alot of companies are switching to them to get beter MPG and still retain HP standards.

Did you read about the 2011 Ford F-150 V6? It has an eco-boost engine (same as the SHO, but with a lot of tweaks) that produces about the same torque as their equivalent base V8. Pretty impressive if you ask me.

    not really

everyone said that when bmw m killed the V10 in favour of the turbocharged V8

the E60 M5s and M6s are still plummeting in value just as quick as every other luxury car

Love that commercial! I hate prius, it always manages to make traffic at carpool lanes...
BTW, your maxima can make it to 300k miles, with proper maintaince of course...Diesel trucks like Ram can make it to 500k max...
I am seriously considering Jetta TDI sports wagen as my next daily driver...But I also want a truck for some towing and off roading and HELL NO, I'm not taking X5 off roading...I really like Nissan Pathfinder for this...

See? And we didn't need to spend $60+ billion to bail them out like "other" manufacturer who was making rubbish...Way to go Ford, I really like your new cars, and would add them on my next purchase list...

I agree Ford has been coming out with some impressive designs latley, and its great to see that they did it without the bailout.

That's the reason I chose a 2000 maxima over a 2002-2003 model. 3.5 are really nice engines, but those early 3.5's had some oil consumption issues. Most 2000-2001 maximas are pushing 200-250k nowadays. Mine only has 90k and it's running strong. The best thing about this car is that is really easy to work on and parts are fairly cheap. I would have loved to get an I30t 5 spd with the LSD tranny or a 20th AE edition, but I couldn't find one in decent shape when I was car shopping.

The new twin V8's though will never have the soul of a high revving V10... The sounds BMW V10's make are incredible, the new X5 ///M is decent at best. I'd prefer the V10 in the new F body. Every car is built for a niche, if you can't pay to play you shouldn't be buying that car...plus the 4-6mpg increase isn't gonna be swaying many buyers...if any. "Hey now the ///M5 gets 14.5mpg, lets buy one!"

    so, why did you quit?

my brother has '02 I35 with 75k miles and doesn't have any oil consumption issues...that's weird...but anyway, Maximas are build to last, but I'd love to upgrade mine to G35/G37 as suspension is a bit soft to my taste...but I don't want it to be too stiff either...
