I have a quick question, this being our first non Japanese car. When we change our oil is it this or the conventional or both? And do we change this oil filter as well as the normal one? Thanks
Ahh Great car. You will love it, I have a GTI and has the same motor as yours, as the GTI is the little brother to the A3. That is the oil filter, it is just the paper cartridge, the brass tool on the bottom of the black housing is a oil filter drain tool, this will drain the oil out of the filter housing so when you open it you do not get oil all over yourself. That oil drain plug you will take out to drain out the sump.
Here is a write up on how to do it on a GTI, should be the same for you. He did not use the tool, you do not have to use it, but I do so that I do not mess up the valve and thus leading to leaking from the oil filter housing drain. DIY: oil change (without the OEM drain tool) | Volkswagen Rabbit/GTI/Jetta/GLI MkV DIY & FAQ One other thing, use a good quality synthetic oil as the FSI motor is prone to high pressure cam lobe and follower wear. Do not do the 10k miles oil change service, keep to 5k as this motor is a oil killer and also has fuel dilution issue as with any Direct Injection motor. So I change my oil around 6-6.5k to keep the fuel dilution low, as fuel is a solvent and can deteriorate the oil's lubrication properties.
Hmmm, well I do not know if the 2009 A3's got the TSI motor as the GTI did, but if it did then the oil filter is on top and not on the bottom. Is this how the motor looks? If so the oil filter you are looking for is by the orange dip stick. Audi/VW have different motor naming between the two brands. But if you have a oil filter up top you have the newer motor and will not have a oil filter on the bottom of your engine. You will pretty much remove the oil filter from the top, it has a valve so it does not spill oil, then just remove the drain plug from the oil pan and you are good to do. The new motor fixed the cam issue the older motor had.
Yeah that what my motor looks like, so I don't have an oil filter on the bottom then. Sweet thanks for the help man
Nope, you have the oil filter up top and you can just drain the oil from the oil pan, or get a oil extractor and pump the oil out via the dip stick. Check around for the oil filter price, last I read the oil filter was very expensive from the dealer try online VW/Audi parts places such as ECS Tuning.
Damn, I was going to ask the same thing. Why do they do this to me? I have all of their soaps, and now you're telling me that there is more, but I can't buy them online! Maybe it's time for a trip to CA. Or a trip to shampoo rehab! Btw, the car looks great. I love my A4.
Nice work mate! That's cool how your parents live close to a little shopping center, any good restaurants in it? Nothing like walking to a restaurant!
HEH nothing much over there but on the other side of the street is a Costco and down the street is Chemical Guys
hmmm, I was about to say you are a cool person for having a A3 and working on it yourself, but now that you say you have CG down the road I dont like you, :hmph:. haha,
