Hey there, first of all happy thanks giving! Hope everyone had a great day.

I have run into a problem that I cannot seem to fix no matter what I have tried: my mom must have driven through a literal puddle of some kind of wood stain or varnish because there are huge spatters of it all over the driver's side of our black RX400h. I have already tried:

    -IPA soaking
    -Optimum Power Clean
-Clay (way too much for clay to deal with)
-Gently picking off the spots and trails of this stuff (would need to polish afterwards due to slight scratches)

What do you guys recommend I should try? I rarely run into something I have not been able to fix but this one has me well and truly stumped.

    Thanks!

Why not try wet sanding with 2500 or 3000 grit then follow it up by polishing it out. If you already tried claying, IPA, and APC and none of those worked. I say try the above unless you know of another gentler way of approaching it. Also pics would help out a lot.

Let me snap a few pictures, I will post them to give you some perspective. Some of it is still soft while others are slightly hardened, however I do not think wetsanding would be the best plan of attack yet. My next step is to use some type of tar removal product like Tarminator or some comparable tar remover.

    A good solvent might work.

you'll need to polish out that panel anyways, i see swirlz
    it looks like glue actually
try some adhesive remover with plastic blades

Haha, I will admit I have not polished the car under the trim line for a little while (I can assure you the rest is near swirl free though!). I will grab a can of Tarminator or adhesive remover tomorrow and will post once I see if that helps.

Thanks for the help everyone, I really appreciate it.

    Solvent or laquer thinner.

Looks like varnish or pine tree sap. Not asking for you to sniff it per se, but does it have an oder? I second the solvent or lacquer thinner suggestion based upon appearance. Use the piece you have pictured and see what works to dissolve it.

Sorry for the delay: Stoner's Tarminator had no effect whatsoever so I am going to Home Depot and getting some lacquer thinner I think. This stuff smells like straight up wood stain/varnish/lacquer and is ALL over the entire driver's side! This is the worse detailing event I have had to deal with so far! There is just so much of it.

+1 on that. As long as you are careful, neither will hurt your finish.

One of the things i have been using to remove tough spots is Autosol metal polish. Ever try removing mold spores that exploded and seems like nothing wants to work on it, Autosol does.
This is what i would be trying to use first, and then maybe try what has been recommended in this thread.
