Hey all. I am building my first home and need some ideas for the garage. I won't have a ton of money at first, but want something simple and achievable as far as storage, paint, and lighting go. Now, for starters, I have a metal and wood shelf that I picked up at Home Depot. This houses all of my detailing stuff now, but I am after more. I was wanting some kind of small workbench or area in my garage

I will try and find a picture of the garage tomorrow for you guys to check out. While I am here, I may as well ask for some pictures of paint color and designs as well as any storage or lighting you would like to show me.

The walls will NOT be textured, so I will have a clean slate to work with as far as paint color and scheme goes. I don't want anything flashy, but I want something inviting for myself as well as my hopeful customers.

I had in mind possibly doing a stripe or something around the garage, wall to wall, about 10 inches in width to offset the bottom and top color. Now, this is a little more work than i wanted. I may just go with one color and do that later.

Regarding the workbench; cant really build one because I do not have tools. I was going to check out HD for something like that. Dont have a ton of room but enough to have a small bench.

Show me what you have and give me some thoughts!

Oh, forgot to mention floor as well. While at HD, I was checking out some floor sealant from Behr. I believe you roll it on and sprinkle the flakes down. Any one who has used this or can give some insight, please chime in@

I wouldn't waste my money... It would look good for a short time and then would be more costly to remove if you wanted to put a real flooring system down

IMO, I would save some money up and put down a QUALITY epoxy floor system

Agreed on the flooring, that roll out stuff is a joke unless you get the Ucoat kit which is a far better product, but not as durable as say pebbletech, even tile. But it depends on what you park on there. But yeah, flooring would be my first priority. I built my house in 07 and still have not figured out what Im going to do thus far, Im leaning on just having the floors polished and sealed.

Very smart, more cost effective than epoxy and looks better IMO. Also gives much better reflectivity. Only problem is that it gets extremely slippery when wet.

yeah, i thought about that.......... But Im getting a huge indoor outdoor rug for the area I detail and park my car, hopefully that helps.

    What he said!

Id look into Silikal flooring systems. Will require professional install and application, but will last forever. (relatively speaking)

Well then, sounds like the committee has spoken! No Behr...Ucoat. I don't have time to look at it currently, but is Ucoat something I can do myself?

Any ideas for paint or storage guys?

i was watching sema on tv and saw that rhino linings now makes a floor treatment for garages.

as for lighting, i don't think you can ever have enough. i hate to say it, but i would spend a great deal of my budget on lighting.

this way, you can work efficiently, and let the results of your work speak for you.

the only other thing i can recommend is if you do look @ shelving, i would suggest getting shelves without any kind of wire mesh, etc. Bottles are way to difficult to place on shelving with spaced bar construction.

    good luck and congatulations!

Yes you can apply UCoat It yourself, hence the name UCoat It ;)

Its strong stuff plus has a lifetime warranty. We have already had brake fluid sitting on it for a week or so and it didn't bother the coating a bit.

I agree on the Ucoat, as previously mentioned in my first post, the OTC kits are too thin and dont last......
Only reason why I looked at polishing and sealing my floor is my neighbor does it and has all the tools, so its not expensive, its just a PITA because I have to evacuate all my stuff out of my garage LOL.

I have been checking into Ucoatit and it looks really good. However, with a price tag like it does, I won't be able to do it for a month or more. Oh well, the garage floor will have time to dry out properly before I have the money to get it.

As far as storage goes, does anyone in here have anything pre-built from Lowes, HD, etc.? I am referring to cabinets, shelving, workbenches, etc. I really would like a workbech of some sort. I found one at HD for $130 I believe. 4 ft long by 3 ft wide. Metal and wood construction. Looks decent actually.

Ligting wise, I want to do some lighting mounted on the wall, but we will have to see about that...I was looking into the Gladiator track system, which sounds great, but the question is: how does one mount up long halogen lighting to those things? There must be some kind of attachment that one could mount the lights to.

You don't want to put anything on the concrete if it is that new, less than 28 days, don't even put your car on it. 28 days is the standard full cure rate.

I would look at epoxy coat as well. It's what I am planning on doing to my garage floor. Looks like it may be better than u-coat as far as durability. I can't say anything good or bad about either as this is my first garage. Added the link not sure if that is allowed....sorry if it isn't.

You may want to rethink what you're going to use. That stuff is crap and is no where near as durable as UCoat It. Made the mistake of using it on another shop...

Appreciate the info^ I may have to re think that one then. What happened? This is for my personal garage I don't have a shop or anything.

I got all my shelving and racks at Orchard Supply, they are the black industrial metal modular, what I like about them is they are not deep. Maybe 18-20" id have to go out and measure them. IIRC, Harbor Freight has a decent workbench......

This is the one im planning on getting, it goes on sale sometimes, but even the non sale price is nice, solid wood top etc.
