Before last summer, I purchased the Raceglaze brush set, and I loved it. However, as I start to detail cars again as the weather warms up, several of the brushes in the set have fallen apart. I used these brushes on a very regular basis with a variety of chemicals (wheels, interiors, etc.) so perhaps that contributed to their degradation. Either way, I'm going to need some more brushes for the upcoming detailing season. Would I be better off ordering another brush set from a detailing site, or going out and purchasing some nice boar's hair paintbrushes from a hardware store, considering how hard I tend to be on brushes and the fact that I'm on a relatively low budget?
Not news I wanted to hear haha, I just picked up the Raceglaze set lol. I hope they last a decent amount of time. I think your ok with going to hardware store and getting the boars hair brushes since you really never can go wrong with boars hair. My recommendation though is to stick with brushes that have the plastic handle rather than wood. I have the Adam's boars hair brush and while I love it to death I can already see the woods handling failing on my in the future. If you end up finding decent boars hair brushes let me know. Also, don't know if you already do it or not, but I would dedicate certain brushes for certain uses, interior, wheels, etc. Might add to their longevity.
I have a large set with variance in size and shape. For barrels I love my wheel woolies. For faces, I reach for my brush with lots of coverage (see here). For lugs and tight areas SV Wheel Brush. For cleaning tire sidewalls a very stiff bristle brush is best. For reaching behind spokes, nothing beats my four-finger mitt (see here). However, the bristles on my SV brush are shedding and the plastic binding cracked. I've seen other people suggest special care with them by not resting them on the bristles and instead hanging them up to dry.
My set is around 2 years old and I use them daily. Typically they are very durable. Where did you get them, as I warranty the RG brush sets I sell.
You all might want to look into this: http://www.detailedimage.com/DI-Brushes-M51/Boars-Hair-Detailing-Brush-P565/ Sorry to hear your having so many problems. I have had my SV wheel brush for 3 years now. It did have the plastic crack in the first 6 months but all I had to do was wrap electrical tape around it a few times and its been golden.
I bought a couple sets of SwissVax brushes and all of the plastic ferrules have cracked.. Some are hardly used, some are used infrequently. Had to tape the red plastci ferrules to keep them together. Poor quality if you ask me... That new 1-piece brush at DI looks very much like the way they should all be made... Tks for posting that ! Dan F
I have some similar to that coming as well. Sorry to hear about the RG brush issues guys. Just out of curiosity, where did you get them? The reason I ask is that there are some similar, but very cheaply made knock offs floating around and only a couple RG resellers.
I have 2 Envy Detailing brush sets, they look similar to RG brushes and so far (~1+ yrs. later of heavy use) they look good as new, no cracks or hair falling out. You might wanna check out these brushed made by Concours in the U.K. http://www.concourscarcare.com/shop#ecwid:category=2074556&mode=product&product=7808705 Shipping seems to be low.
I got mine from Wisdom Detail. Mine aren't completely falling apart, but I do see some bristles shed often.
I purchased a set from Ken 2 years ago and use them to maintain 4 family cars washed on bi-weekly basis and they are holding up well...The only complaint I have is handle is hollow inside, so everytime I dip it in a bucket I have to flip it upside down to let soapy water out.
I have a RG XL wheel brush that is about a year old, it definitely has not held up. Missing bristles and they also seemed to have lost their "fluffiness" I bought it from 911(excellent service btw) but a not so great product for the price
