Hey all, This is a detail of my personal car. It’s one of my first full details and the very first with a rotary. I’ve used PC for years, but I thought it was time to step up my game. I picked up this Infiniti new late last year. The car was not in great shape when I brought it home. I didn’t realize it until after I brought it home and washed off all of their glaze. Not too bad overall, but annoying. There were some minor holograms, water spots and a couple of RIDS. Because of my schedule, I was never able to do a full correction on the car. But I did clean up most of the scratches, hit the car with some 85RD and waxed for the winter. Please feel free to comment on my technique or materials. I’m still learning too, but I was pretty excited with the results. I apologize in advance that I didn’t take as much photo evidence as I should have. On Friday night, I decided to get the wheels, wheel wells, engine and interior out of the way. Sorry for the lack of before pictures on the rims. The rims were in great shape except for the front which seems to have a combo of brake dust and rust from when the car sat for three rainy days at an airport. Luckily, I was able to clean the rims up pretty well with a small piece of clay and an Uber wheel brush. I sprayed the wheel wells with my simple green solution and let them sit. After a few minutes I used a medium coarse brush on the black plastic areas of the wheel wells. The interior was not in rough shape at all. I took out the winter mats and cleaned them with APC and a stiff brush. The interior was then vacuumed and dusted using old MF towels and a brush. I then applied the Lexol cleaner and conditioner to the seats and leather trim and Vinylex to the plastic I sprayed the engine bay with APC and used a smaller detail brush to clean in some of the nooks and crannies. I lightly rinsed with a hose and allowed to dry. After dry, I applied Vinylex to the plastic pieces. This is something I would really like to get better at. But I’m a little reluctant to open up on the engine with a hose. Day 2 On day two I washed the car using my $10 foam cannon. It’s really worth about $5. Not a great tool but it gets the car soaped up before going hands-on. Following the two-bucket wash, I used some gray Adam’s detail clay on the paint. It was great at taking off a lot of the crud that accumulates during a Connecticut winter. I dried the car with an Uber blue drying towel and took the car under the lights to inspect the paint. I found a little more than I bargained for. Overall, there really were not many swirls in the paint. I think most were probably the result of washing with ONR all winter without a hose. There were some other issues though. Minor swirling all over the car along with some holograms and RIDS. Larger scratches near the rear bumper. I experimented with several combinations and was relieved to learn that I did not have the sticky clear coat issue. I did have a very hard clear coat though. I found that Menzerna 203S with an Uber green pad removed all of the swirls, smaller scratches, and water spots. This process brought the paint to a finish that was LSP ready. But since it was my own car I followed with 85RD and blue pad. On the RIDS and deeper defects, I substituted an Uber orange cutting pad with the 203S. Test section of the hood. Day 3 This was the real paint correction day. I followed the routine above and worked my way around the entire car. I followed up the polished with Blackfire Paint sealant which I applied with the PC. I followed that with Blitz carnauba by hand. Here are some after shots. Thanks for reading. I’m still a noob at this so please, any feedback is welcome. Jay
Nice ride! For the wheel wells, it's a fabric liner what do you use to clean it? I tried putting a brush in there but it doesn't help much.
Looks great...As far as being new. Hang in there. I think it was a good idea to break it up like you did. It takes some of the pressure off. Don't go by time. go by results...:thumb:
Thanks for the kind words guys. I actually do think that breaking it up helped me. At a minimum, it made sure that I had time to focus on perfection a section as I went along. Regarding the cloth liner in the wheel wells, it's really tough. I also found that a brush was hard to use. A softer brush was easier and it didn't get caught on the fabric, but it was still hard. I found that the best thing to do is just hit with a hard stream of water and aggitate the dirt with your hand. This is the only part of the car that I hit straight on with a higher pressure water stream.
A deliciously polished G35. MMmmmm G35. Well done !! I have a 08 G35X. Wish I purchased the G35S. How are you liking the car? I find the ride a little rough at times.
Thanks. I love the car. I came out of an FX35 so was ready for something sportier. I don't mind the harsh ride, but you're right. It's has a bite at times.
Really nice work Jay :applause: I'd recommend a nice treatment for your windshield like Aquapel to make it all complete.
