In the entrance to my apartment, there's a musty/wood smell that dwells when I don't have the air/heater on or the windows open. The only part of the apartment that is carpeted is the first two steps going to the front door. Could this be the culprit? I don't think it's the air vents as the smell seems to go away with use of them.

That would seem like moisture/humidity in your apartment. i do not know but do you have people leaving on top or under your apartment? Sometimes its not you but your neighbor.

Yeah I'm right in the middle of two actually. It's not like an on and off thing, it's every time I come into the apartment.

Oh man you are in a tuff situation. i would try to pinpoint the area of smell first then try to determine if you do you have moisture and where it is coming from. i would be careful and try to remedy the smell because i would not want to be inhaling mold later on. good luck.
