Well its that time of year again to give the Mondeo a quick spruce up and to be honest it has been neglected recently with the house and the Tank so I decided to give her the once over. The main area of concern was the bonnet riddled with stone chips after following an ambulance transporting my son to hospital up the motorway averaging 120mph last year when my son had a seizure in the middle of a traffic jam. This time as I have posted this car before and the light failed before I finished plus it was wet, I have gone for a bit of an arty after “shoot” so I hope u like something a bit different. In total the bonnet is about 70% improved some chips are still visible but at least they are covered and for a first attempt I am very happy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and I’ll get some outside shots tomorrow. I won’t bore you with before pics, it was dirty and had gathered a few random scratches form general wear and tare but apart from that it was in excellent order. So the main focus was on improving the dozens of stone chips on the bonnet. TBH a respray would be a better option so I decided to practice my filling and sanding as if I made a mess it was going to get painted anyway!!! The whole car was washed as per usual and tar removed with a final clay to make sure all was in order. The paint was assessed with 50 readings taken across the bonnet showing a nearly consistent 146 microns. Sceptical I recalibrated and remeasured to make sure. I decided to use a laser marker to give me a pin point to measure accurately the amount of paint removed (high tec this stuff). PROCESS - Bonnet: • Stone chips filled with perf. Blue base and left to dry. • Lacquer added to fill the chip and left to dry. • Sanded using 3M 4” pads and lube until as flat as possible • Readings of paint taken after each pass. • After I used Menz intensive compound & 3M Machine Polish on a 3M compounding pad • Followed by Menz 85RD on a 3M waffle finishing pad • Finished off with 3M Machine Polish on a 3M waffle finishing pad. PROCESS – Rest of car: • Menz 85RD on a 3M waffle pad • Refined with 3M machine Polish on a 3M waffle pad Laser guided idiot? Now for the rest of the car: I told you detailing was child’s play!!! One big problem I had was the 85RD DUSTING!!!!!! LSP TIME: • 2 coats of Dodo Double hard left to sit for 3 hours and buffed with 1 hour between . • 2 coats of Dodo Double soft left to sit 3 hours and 1 hour between. • Wipe down with Turtle Wax Ice QD (awesome stuff). I hope u like. Thanks for reading. Ronnie:thumb:
