DUBAI / MÜNSTER -- For the automotive industry and its suppliers, the Middle East is an interesting market with a high development potential. High-quality and innovative products and services are particularly in demand in this region. BASF Coatings' Glasurit® brand has proven itself for years on the region's automotive refinish market and now is meeting the demands of customers with a new version of its portable spectrophotometer. Glasurit has introduced the device, which goes by the name of Glasurit RATIO-Scan II, at BMW Abu Dhabi Motors.

Dave Jerrison, responsible for sales for the region, explained: "The market is growing and at BASF, we are growing along with it. With our Glasurit brand, we are a major supplier the automotive refinish sector. Partnerships with customers and innovation are fundamental for long-term success."

The new spectrophotometer is the latest example for a novel solution for customers. At its presentation at the 2010 Automechanika trade show in Dubai, some 20,000 visitors were able to get a first impression of how it works. As the first customer in the region, BMW Abu Dhabi Motors will now work with Glasurit RATIO-Scan II. Heiko Guy, Marketing Services BASF Coatings, introduced the tool during a two-day training seminar at the BMW Abu Dhabi Motors body and paint shop - already a BASF customer for 15 years. "BMW's attitude at this center is very professional and progressive. Thus, the company is always very open to innovation." The spectrophotometer also quickly convinced BMW employees and manager Taisir Sabih, Guy added.

    Mobile color measuring device

For bodyshops with a high throughput that are often confronted with challenging color matching, Glasurit RATIO-Scan II is exactly the right choice. The mobile color measuring device facilitates and accelerates color matching, since it automates the search and selects the most suitable color from many similar colors.

Once measurement data has been transferred to the computer, the program searches for a solution in the global color database. In doing so, the program selects a number of suitable colors, decides which one fits best and then indicates a CPS color chip and the mixing formula. Spray painters can use specific bodyshop software on their computers, Profit-Manager or Profit-Manager PRO, to weigh in the formula, correct it if needed and store custom colors.

Color tools are perfectly planned and coordinated for Glasurit, which makes the search so quick and convenient for bodyshops. Simply accessing COLOR-ONLINE, the Glasurit mixing formula database on the internet, provides bodyshops with the whole range of colors for cars and commercial vehicles of all carmakers worldwide. The database, with more than 164,000 colors, is the world's largest and is updated daily.

In conjunction with specific Glasurit bodyshop software, the three versions of Profit-Manager, bodyshops can integrate color matching into computer-assisted color and material management.

For Michel Bodeson, product manager for refinish color systems, Glasurit RATIO-Scan II is the quickest way to find the right color: "The color-matching process is now much faster. Handling the device is easy and there is a color database to store all the color readings taken during the course of a typical day's work. In short, it's a 100% successful system for our customers." The new technology is making its way to the Middle East, with BMW Abu Dhabi Motors taking the first step.
