Well now that I have 2 Metabos and a Hitachis and I have come to the conclusion that I am happy to have them all. The metabo is awesome to work with, as long as the pads are smaller than 6 inches. Its light and my favorite machine by far. The Hitachi is great because it DOES NOT overheat and has the long handle to burnishing. But the bad part about it is that its heavy and it tends to skip a lot more than the Metabo.
I would agree with you on the Metabo but it's great having spare rotarys. I've never operated a Hitachi but I have a Makita as a spare and I doo enjoy the triger design, it works great on just regular flat panels but the Metabo shines during the vertical polishing such as door panels. I'd still go with the Metabo that's just my :2cents:
I used the hitachi for a year before I got the metabo. The hitachi served me well, but I did have to send it out once to get the trigger/dial assy replaced. A local repair center got it back to me in 1 week. Since I got the metabo, the hitachi just sits and collects dust as a spare. Yes it would be nice to have a trigger on the metabo and maybe a better location for the speed dial, but oh well..... I've only had the metabo go into thermo shutdown once on me. I was polishing a black 911 for about 8-9 hours with maybe a 30 min break. In the last hour it just died. It has not done it since. FMINUS, Have you used any wool pads that are over 6"? I would guess that half of my total time polishing with my metabo has been with the Edge 7 1/4" wool pads using the adapter. That setup is ultra smooth for sure.
WHY CAN'T METABO JUST ADD A TRIGGER!!! I would love to try one out...but I don't really know how to pick up product and work on curves without a trigger.
When I first got the Metabo it over heated on me a few times. I adjusted some things and it hasnt happened since.
Yes, I'm curious as well what exactly did you adjust D&D...you can adjust the pad, meaning you can adjust the size you use, you can adjust the extension cord you use, you can adjust where you connect the Metabo meaning that it will overheat if you connect the Metabo with some lights on the same extension cord...I don't know..oh I've also adjusted how I use it..what I've done is that I've noticed it seems to heat up when you use it in short burst so what I've done is not turn off the machine at all for lets say polishing the entire hood that has definetly helped at keeping the Metabo at a cool temperature. But I'd love to hear more about what you have done D&D :hippie:
I have both machines and still prefer the Hitachi. When compounding with wool the Metabo overheats. I won't even get into finishing work with it as low speeds just don't get along with it at all. My Hitachi doesn't seem to care how it's used and has been reliable from day one.
Are you using wool or foam to compound when it overheats? The only other issue I had with my metabo is when I was using a 10yr old extension cord that had seen better days. It was causing the metabo to cut out. I plugged in another cord and all was well.
Wool. I picked up a 10G 25ft Rigid cord hoping that would help and it didn't. I had a plug installed on it's own breaker and that didn't help. Maybe it's defective?
 yup, i"ve done the same SpoiledMan but what I found really helped the Metabo is using smaller pads that and continues use. I've found that with smaller pads and continues speeds my Metabo dosen't over heat...oh and I know exactly what you mean about getting a good extension cord and getting a plug dedicated for the Metabo as I've done the same :thumb:
I completely agree with you, the Metabo is so finicky and temperamental. But when its working, man its bliss.
Sounds like yours is definitely defective. It should not over heat in those conditions, especially when using wool.
I agree, sent it in for repair. I use mine with the larger 7-8" edge wool pad and besides for the one time it runs great.
