So lately i have been using Menzerna SIP. The problem i am running into is as i am taking the polish off it is leaving a oily residue that makes it look like holograming. The problem is no matter how many times i go over it the residue does not come off. I know a IPA wipedown will remove it but the guy i have been detailing with is not having this problem (detailing with the same setup as me and on the same car). Can anyone tell me what i am doing wrong? I dont think i am using to much product because if i use any less the pad will be dry. Am i not working it long enough or to long? I know its residue because if i wipe the residue will move around. Any suggestions?
As well as the suggestion above carry out a pre-polish IPA wipe-down process, it might take more than once as it maybe that silicone / wax /a polymer residue may be causing this problem
Are you priming the pad thoroughly, but then just adding a bit of polish? Or applying polish to an otherwise dry pad?
I would suggest perhaps that you're not working it long enough. You don't mention what pad you're using, not that it really matters. Try increasing your working time...you can work it until you don't see it anymore and the paint starts to jump. Stop; buff; admire. Let us know how it works for you. The other thing with Menz products is don't use too much...it goes a long way and too much can be problematic..it was a learning curve for me to see how little could do so much.
Not to sound like a wise guy, but ask the guy who you're working with, or watch what he's doing different from you.
LOL dont worry. I tried watching and asking. I did what he said and i am still having the issue given its less frequent but it is still happening.
Are you sure the paint is clean to begin with? Maybe a Prep All wipedown before polishing would remove anything still on the surface... the only reason I mention this is from observing some LSP's that, if buffed before the solvents are gone, can have the same effect. Don't know if introducing the oils into an LSP on the surface would simulate this effect. Otherwise, like the others have said, the polish may still need to be broken down more.
Do you mean you are doing the same car together? My guess is as stated above, you are simply using too much product or are not working it long enough. On a 5.25 or 6" pad I only use two or three pea sized drops of polish an I never prime my pads with anything. Work the polish until it goes clear meaning you can still see an oily film but can see the colour of the car clearly. I usually will polish for another few passes after this point at 900 - 1000 rpms. As Richy said, Menz products have a decent play time so keep polishing until there is almost nothing left on the panel. :thumb:
Yes working on the same car together. From reading the responses i think my problem is a combination of not working it long enough and using to much. You say 3 pea size dots. How big of an area would i work with that amount (ball park)?
I ran into this same problem when I started using Menz products. Turns out, like others said, I was using too much and not working it long enough. I watched Nica's video on rotary use and my problems were solved.
Give it a spritz with a mixture of IPA/water or window cleaner will help you as well. But I second on all the other advice given in this thred; less polish and polish it longer.
in my experience menz products are finicky so just practice practice practice until you get a feel for it
