I was thinking, considering I'm using the standard backing plate that came with it and a 6.5 inch pad, which basically all lines up flush when I place it on, could this be making it have a life of its own?

Sometimes you will get that when you aren't keeping the pad flat. Are you keeping the pad flat? Also, if you aren't using enough product it could cause the pad to jump.

You shouldnt be getting any hopping at all with any wool pad. Something is wrong with your technique. Im assuming this is a brand new pad you're using? Are you putting the polish on the pad or the paint? Only thing I can think of is the pad is getting gummed up, but even then it really shouldnt hop. What car is this? Have you tried using a foam pad with the PC?

2000 Lincoln LS. It's probably my technique, I've only used it two times. Polish on the pad, and yea it works fine with the PC.

Like Dan said you should not ne getting any type of hop with that pad and I would also agree it is your technique. Once again like Dan has said the pad might be gummed up, but it should still glide over the paint. To me it is the way you are holding the buffer. With the wool pad try holding it at a slight angle and see how this works.

I dont like putting the polish on the pad, it gums up very quickly. Lower the rpms to 1000 or lower until you get the hang of it. You dont need much pressure. Heres a short video of using a wool pad, YouTube - Clean Dean Auto Detailing Buffing Demo Sorry, couldnt find anything better.

I pick up the beed of compound when using the rotary. I wouldn't apply it to the pad unless your using a D/A.
