Making my own version of 3m backing plate

Since one can't get a 3m backing plate here in the US, or spend $80 to get one, I was thinking...
What about placing a pad, for instance a lo-profile orange 5" pad, on a 5" backing plate, spray the face of the pad with adhesive spray, spray the back of cut-to-size hook velcro, and glue the velcro to the face of the low profile pad. Now just choose a pad to use for a particular job, and slap it onto the now-velcroed face of the lo profile pad, which is now used as a cushion.
    Any thoughts on this?

You can't be sure unless you try, I doubt it will hold up to the stress when in use yet it might if a very strong glue and a very stiff sponge is used to hold the Velcro.

The white lc pad has to be perfect for this!

I would have to agree with distrbd on this one, I mean it's worth trying if you don't try you dont know but the key component here is the glue that will hold the foam and the velcro.

But still worth a shot if you ask me :thumb:

Keep us posted on how you make out :giterdone:

    Nica,
How soft....or firm....is the yellow foam used as a cushion on the 3m plate?

i don't disagree with the others when saying give it a shot ,but rarely do things like this work out..i understand the 3M BP might be a bit high in price for your liking but the cost of a repaint would be a lot more money...

get your self a decent BP until you can afford a 3M bp if thats what you want..be smart,be safe ,not sorry..what ever you decide good luck :thumb:

I'll try it out on my wife's car first. :tiptoe:
My concern at the moment, IF everything works out OK, is how the glued velcro on the face of the pad that's used as a cushion would hold up to pads taken on and off it. I can't see the glued velcro staying on too long under the pressure of pads being taken off of it.
    We'll see.

Sounds like a pretty good project to try!

I wonder if Gorilla Glue would be strong enough. I think you'd need like 2mm of a strong epoxy to be absorbed by the "cushion" pad then stuck on to the velcro.

    Give it a dance!!!

I think you might have a better chance if you glue the Velcro to a round piece of hard plastic and then when it's fully dried glue that to the face of the pad,why ?well I'm thinking it would be easier to remove a pad from a solid piece of Velcro than a Velcro which is just attached to a sponge,I Hope it makes sense what I'm saying, remember you'll be as you said putting on and taking off the pads from the Velcro many many times .

Now that looks like my idea exactly! Call my attorney! Hmmmm....maybe I'm better off spending the 10-15 bucks to try one of those.
