hey all, have still been trying to play with different pads and product lines. got some pads in the mail last week that were talked about here in the forums so I thought I would give feedback on them and see what everyone thinks. I bought the micro-surface tuf0buff black pads. bought them in the five inch size and used them with my makita and the gloss-it five inch backing plate. am trying these pads because I have used all of the lake country pads and am about to trying out the flat pads on detailersdomain.com the combo that I tried on the front panel of my black s2000, very badly swirled up (car washing), was a five inch pad with menzerna 106ff. also used some of gloss-it's lubricant to ensure that the polish was like melted butter to reduce friction. I can say this, the lubricant from gloss it mixed in with 106ff and especially SIP was just fantastic. completely removed all friction and flashing I have experienced in the past and allowed me to get a very long working time out of SIP. 106ff worked ok with the black wool pad at a speed of 1-2.5. 2.5 was just for a second though because I could see that the product was removing webbing pretty good. replaced the pad with another clean (new) pad, applied the lubricant and one small drop of SIP. ran the buffer from 600, 900, 1200 and ran it for two passes after bringing it down 900, 600 and wiped it down and took a look. the polishing compound literally looks ust lke melted butter. no flashing at all. now here is the thing, after buffing off with a dry micro towel I found halograms that looked very close knit like the polish. like melted, smeared on butter in the paint. I was not nervous nor completely surprised by this as I expected the pad to be aggressive. but all scratches and defects were wiped out went to my pc and a LC white 5 inch pad and some 106ff and after just a few passes they were completely gone. ****curious though, being the novice that I am. is there something I was doing wrong to create these swirls. have read alot online about detailers intentionally creating these types of swirls only to take them out with a polish. am looking for feedback heree. was a going to high of an rpm? was the polish too strong? I feel it was effective but if I can use something that causes less damage would like to go that rout.****** thanks
your s2k has soft honda paint. a good combo to clear up the swirls is SIP with an orange pad, followed by micro-polish and blue pads. I did a 2000 s2k in NFR earlier this year using this combo and it came out great. I used to own one myself, and always love meeting owners of this car.
so the swirls caused were because of the pad being too aggressive? did take it as slow as possible and am thinking about using some other pads. now that I have that great lubricant to make the polishes last longer before flashing the whole detailing experience is so much more enjoyable and faster! I will try the back panel of my s2k tonight before bed with a LC orange pad with SIP. will also try another panel with a white LC and SIP and see how this makes a difference as sad as it is I am finally starting to mess with pad and product combos. will also try an orage pad with 106ff. bet even that will work on the soft honda paint marcus
you dont need to play around too much, especially on soft paint. what foam pads do you have and what polishes do you have? I need to see what you got o follow up the orange pad/sip combo.
I have bought every lake country pad made available and in each size. I have five of each (color and size) so I have alot for a guy trying to learn the art. buf-tuff black wool buffing pads five 5 inch pads and five 2 inch pads also just bought some gloss-it wool pads. have two of the white pads (5inch) and two of the grey pads (5inch). have not used the gloss-it pads as of yet. I have the followoing menzerna products: 85rd final finish 106ff ip sip power gloss I have the following waxes: swissvax concourso black fire FMJ : which I finish off all of my customers cars off with menzerna glaze: which I usually use on "most" of my customers cars because of how deep it can make the darker colors look. machines: makita 9227 for compounding/polishing porter cable 7424 for finessing paint I have been doing most of my details with the porter cable but it is a very long long job doing this and not profitable. have been going into using the makita for small jobs like hoods and large panels on cars but take it very very slowly. so basically am confident with what I am doing with paint and what the polishes do. but.... going from pc to makita is a whole new ball of wax. taking it very very slowly by making sure to test around alot. so there it is in a nut shell, looking for the best direction I can get. was thinking of flying down to irvine and taking a open garage class at menzerna and (not because of their products) see how the pro's compound, polish and finesse the paints on their cars. I really want to pick their brains. marcus
Is it possible that an orange pad is a little over-aggressive for 106ff? Disclaimer: I have never used 106ff, but my understanding is that it's got very little cut to it. More than 85RD obviously, but less than, say, PO203S.
just thought I would give you guys an update. I used these wool pads on my s2000 with SIP and left very thick swirls like the paint was melted butter. used this same combination on my friends 2006 bmw M5 and the results were LSP ready. ceramic paint responds very very well to this. just in case any of you are check back on this combo
wow wool pad on a s2000 that's harsh for that clear coat, s2000 has soft clear coat so I'm sure a wool pad induced and removed clear coat significantly.
do you have a link to the gloss-it polishing lubricant you used? I searched their online shop but couldn't find it. Maybe this will be useful with my m105 :applause2:
