I have been using M105 and M205 then a IPA wipedown and then my LSP (usually 845) but I think that a 3rd polish application would be benificial...but which Menzerna polish to use.
po106fa or po85rd, the first being more aggressive, but finishing just as nicely. I've never used ultrfina, which is suggested in later posts.
85rd is what I have used although I must say that I have found 205 to finish down very well if you work it slowly enough. I have been sent some 3M ultrafina to try which is supposed to be equivalent to the 85rd.
either one MIGHT be good. I've used both for a long time, on softer paints I like UF.......it can fill incidentally if you won't work it and check for filling. You only need to do about 4-6 passes and its done, you can work it longer but have never found increased results. 85rd is a nano abrasive for harder clears, on soft paints I've had limited success, usually because I just know to use UF, on harder paints with good technique you can up the gloss for sure. FP is a pure polish that is even finer than 85rd, also great for soft paints, but you have to work it........hence I use UF. Cheers, Greg
Depending on your paint, and if you're willing to spend a little time honing in some new techniques, you could do the whole thing with 105 and get a flawless finish.
85RD, 106 is about same cut as 205 but i think it finished little better but 85 should be better since you dont need much cut after 85rd so id say 85rd
Oh, 3m product...I thought maybe it was a different Menzerna polish. Is there a data base here or that a member has created distinguishing what models have soft/hard clears? Thank you for all your guys help!
http://www.detailingbliss.com/forum/compound-polishing/3936-hard-clears.htm good reading here.^ I have read numerous times that Corvettee C4 & C5 clear is ultra hard. From experience, mazda. mitsubishi, toyota, subaru, nissan and many japenese cars have relatively soft clear coats. As mentioned in the link, german cars tend to be a bit harder. If you were to post the car you are working on / plan to work on, I'd bet someone would have some experience with that particular paint and chime in.
I don't think you need another step. However, if you want to buy something, go with 106fa. Everyone loves P085rd, but 106fa finishes just as nice and has some cut which makes it more versatile for single-stage correction of minor wash marring. 106fa will replace everything except a compound or heavier polish, so you wouldn't need your 205 anymore or 85rd. Another option would be to add something like CG EZ Creme after 205. I've done 106fa followed by CG EZ Creme after with excellent results. You can do a car with EZ creme very quickly - I apply it kind of in between a polish and a wax for effort. Flex, one vertical pass followed by one horizontal pass, then move on.
Is the EZ CREAM a filler? I love glazes when they're first applied but after the oils are washed away the finish looks terrible.
My experience is that is has a very minor, almost negligible, filling ability. There are other glazes that are better for filling. However, you shouldn't need any of those since you are looking for another step after 105 / 205 and presumably your paint will be fully corrected at this point. EZ Cream is mostly just for adding a bit of shine, slickness to the surface (which it does well), and serving as yet another step for those looking to perform yet another step.
M205 is a great polish but it does not finish down 100% on all paints, namely soft clear coats. If you need to clean up any residual marring from 205 pretty much anything will work, in that case why not use 85rd if you have it? That is pretty much the least aggressive finishing polish around and it works beautifully. Although 106FA does have more cut (no not as much as 205 IMO) it does finish down just about the same as 85rd. On dozens of paints I have tried to find any noticeable difference between 106FA and 85RD and, well, I cant. As a matter of fact if you ask Jeff Silver from Menzerna the difference between the 2 he will tell you that FA is 85rd just with 3x the powder abrasive content.
working on a black tahoe now and if i work 205 until its totally dry with a green uber (pc) i see no side by side difference between it and 85rd with a white lc. but the black civic i did two weeks ago 85rd is the only thing that would finish down properly. and for the record i hate 85rd ...it looks amazing but my arm falls off after 2-3 panels from the long work times
