What is that knob underneath by the trigger. Is that a speed control.

What happens when you pull the trigger. Does It start slow or does It go like a bat outa hell.

If It has only one speed. It won't be that great for paint correction.

If It has a slow start and variable speed It would pretty good for paint correction or at least a good starter for you to see if you want to go in that direction. It looks like you will be needing a new backing plate and some polishing pads in order to try it out. You should ask around on the forum and see If anyone has some old stuff hanging around so you don't have to make a big investment. Just to try it out.

By the way. You don't have to be scared. This has a way of working Its self out...Really...I hope this helped. uncleglenny

Wow that's antique, I haven't seen one those for years. I saw one of those at Gerry's body shop, he no longer uses it but told me that was his first rotary he ever laid his hands on and keeps it as a trophy.

But yes, they do have the speed dial under neath rather then the top like the new Makita rotary's. Quite the machines I tell ya, neat to look at.

Congrats, take good care of that machine.

My grandfather passed away about two years ago and we were cleaning out the shed at our shore house in LBI, NJ and I found what looked like a rotary from about 1950. I should see if we still have it in the shed. It was all metal and only had one speed setting.

Pads and plate sizes are going to depend on what you want to use. You can use anything from 4" to 8.5" pads. I have a DA, and have 4" to 6.5" pads. I will be using the same pads when I get a rotary, I just have to get the right size backing plates.

Here's a link to backing plates for a rotary, with info to help you decide what size plate for what size pads you have: Rotary Flexible Backing Plate- Manufactured by Lake Country just for rotary / circular polishers. Hook and loop backing plates for your makita 9227,

Most people use anything from 4" to 6.5" pads.

    I have 4", 5", 5&1/4", 5.5", 6", and 6.5" pads. I have flat, ccs, and waffle style pads.

It's all a matter of preference and what arear you'll be using them on. The 4" pads are great for small and tight areas, while 5" pads and up can be used for the rest of the panels.
