WOOT, first new phone in 3 years...just got the HTC Hero for Sprint...so far like it..getting use to full touch screen...need to mess around with the widgets and all that good stuff. Find a case and screen protector and I will be all set. Anyone with a Android phone have any suggestions or must have apps?

    i've got the droid eris...

some apps that i have which are pretty damn neat are the barcode scanner which uses your camera to scan the barcode of products at stores, it then searches online for cheaper prices online or locally to you. Advanced Task Killer is another app that came highly recommended from the sales person at verizon because for the eris at least, the only downfall that I notice so far would be the battery life. So with that program you can automatically close all open apps in the background to help save battery life with one push of a button.

One game that i've recently been addicted to is Robo Defense it's another one of those defend the castle type of games, but the graphics and game play on a phone is awesome. These are just a few apps that are worth taking a look at but it keeps constantly updating so there's always more to check out. Oh and did I mention that all these apps are FREE!!!

Sweet, I will check them out..how do you close a app...like when browsing the web if you just hit home does it really close it or is there some other thing you have to do...

Tonight is going to be looking at all the apps and seeing what there is out there..

I just got an HTC hero as well but its the euro model style. I don't think that one is there in usa. I like it! I am typing on it right now and the keyboard is ok, now only if DB will make a mobile version of this site!

Android is awesome but to be honest the keyboard, screen and web browser aren't as polished and smootg as the iphone. But it does well in multitasking, UI visuals and other things. In the 2 days i had it it was easy to learn how to operate- I had fears that it would be confuaing. If only it had the faster processor like the nexus one but then again its a lot cheaper. Overall no regrets :) ohh and I like how tou can hold the kwyboard key for a few seconds to get the special charcter- makes it easy to use emoticons.

as far as the Eris goes, I haven't found a way to close the app permanently after i'm done with it. For instance, i'm on the browser and want to go back to the home screen. I just push the home button on the phone and go back to the main screen, but the browser app is still running in the background. With the ATK app, it kills the app for me. There isn't any option to close the program when i'm finished with it which is why the sales lady told me that this program is essentially one of those must haves when starting out.

Can you have it kill it automatically when you go back to home screen? I looked into options and auto-kill was grayed out and could not find how to activate it.

Timely thread. My boss let me replace my old LG CT 810 and I went with the Droid Motorola. Just got it yesterday.

Today is my first chance to work with it. Spent the morning entering all my contacts because I lost them going from AT&T to Verizon. Just now going to start looking for some Apps to download. I'm going to have to check out the barcode app.

This is the first phone I've gotten really excited about owning.

    :)

luke: just planning on getting a screen one and have 2 on order...dont like full ones as i hate the edges but will look into it. Ahh, I have application of the clear film down now...have done so many for friends on there phons, iPods and such.

BarCode app is pretty cool, now just figuring out what i want on my home screen. I am just going to enter all my contact info on Google and just sync it to the phone.

Anyone know if you can sync a outlook calender to google or something...

Oh sure, do it the easy way. :hmph: I set up my Gmail account a little while ago and realized I could have done just that and made it much easier. I added some contacts and organized them into groups and it works well that way.

When I first setup the Gmail account I selected options to hide all my contacts. I didn't realize it would hide them on my phone too. Later when I went to check the contacts on the Droid it told me I didn't have any. I almost Sh*t. :thud:

    :)

Maybe with the paid version. Like I said, the ATK version I have is the Lite (free). For me, I usually just let the apps go and when i get to work I kill all the running apps since we cant' use our phones in the kitchen. That way it's not draining the battery for nothing.

I got a droid Eris about a month ago some of my fav apps are

Locale- Based on GPS coordinates you can change settings. Like vibrate only for work. Volume at 100% at home. even though you have to pay for it I love it. you can even set it to go into airplane mode automatically at airport.

Metal detector- pretty obvious and free. I am not sure how it works. I lost a screw while mountian biking in the woods and found it with the app.

Robo defense- addictive is al I can say

    Toss it- another addictive game

Pandora- nice to have music while working

color flash light- again pretty obvious

Head to heard racing- pretty simple graffix but you can race people all over the country

Space physics-awesome physics based drawing game one of the few apps I have paid for

Air control- fun free game where you're an aircontroller and have to guide planes in with out them crashing into eac other.

I was looking at a few of those..going to play around more tonight. Trying to get the best battery life so turning off all auto updates as i dont use the weather stuff or any of the other social stuff. I can manually update if i choose to use them anyways.

oooooooooh a new phone. I'll be looking into switching phone carriers in several months. Full Touch Screen phones are a trip but also can be rather annoying at times.

Does your phone also have a qwerty keyboard? I do like most all HTC phones though as a lot of them are Windows based phones and you basically have a mini pocket pc at your fingertips and can run all sorts of pretty neat applications if it is a windows based phone.

Does not have a physical keyboard, but you can butcher writing pretty bad and it will still understand what you are saying and correct your typing. I am by no means good at spelling and it suggest works dead on every time so far.

Did not like the windows based phones as they seems to run slower and just idk..dont like the fact you cant mute text messages when you receives them as i like to have something longer than just a single tone when i get text.

Keep us posted, I'm about ready to upgrade phones (sprint as well) and I've been completely satisfied with my blackberry 8350i, so the tour was likely the next phone... but if theres something better it might be time to mix it up a bit.

I am planning on getting a Nexus One as soon as it comes out for Verizon (March 23rd). That is unless the HTC Incredible doesn't come out first.

If you main focus is email and business, the Hero is not the best phone for you. Blackberry's have the best mail client and the tour one of the best keyboards, so I say if thats the focus get the tour. If its a personal phone and you want to have some fun, the HTC Hero is def. the choice! I mean there is so much great apps, and they can run in the background and its a major plus over the iPhone. The best phone for me might not be the best for you, so I recommend you try it out to see if you like it :)

2x that if you looking for a business phone BB is going to be the way to go, if you looking for a fun phone Hero has been great so far. Metal detector app is wicked cool.

Just looking around for a external battery charger now...also wonder what LSP would be best for this phone...the casing is a soft touch kind of...maybe some Insignis on the screen...dont know yet
