So this morning I woke up and I could not get the thought of grout sponges out of my head. After 15 minutes I said screw it. I jumped up and fought with throwing on yesterday's jeans like I was trying to get out of a burning house, or better yet, run from a pissed off father ;).

I arrived at Lowe's and found myself in the flooring aisle starring at sponges when I noticed something interesting. Lowe's sales car care equipment, Meguiars, etc. So I grabbed 3 Pro Line grout sponges, aka, life changers. After checking out I then gleefully skipped to my car (ok, so I didn't skip... or did I?) and raced home as fast as the little VQ35 would carry me.

After prepping everything for wash, I looked at the sponge, took a deep breath and splashed it in the bucket and then it came to rest on the roof of the car. Man, this thing feels nice, I thought. After developing a technique, this thing just glides effortlessly across the surface, like, hell, I don't know, something slippery. I soon discovered that when moving to the next panel, if you give the sponge a slight squeeze it deposits a thick foam that spreads very nicely giving ample lubrication.

For those that are scared of marring the surface, don't worry, I had tears of fear rolling down my cheeks at first, then my neighbor asked me if I was some kind of girly man. So I sucked it up and started washing. I noticed something really cool. As you wash a slightly grimy panel, you see see the edge of the sponge literally suck up the muck. almost like a fade job on the leading side of the sponge that isn't touching the paint. One quick dunk and squeeze and it looks fresh out of the warpper. Another plus, you're putting the soapy water on the paint and not on the driveway. It drops almost nothing between the bucket and the car.

I love the grout sponge so much that if I had a daughter, she could date it.

Awesome! I've been saying it for about 2 years now. Those sponges are the only wash medium that has not marred the super soft cc on my Lexus.

    I'm a confirmed Non-believer.. .

I can't help it.. Years ago, moving from rags to a sponge then to a real wool mitt, I just can't, can't go back..

I've a hankering for this new Zymol Sponge I've read about and also these new twisted micro-fiber mitt's, but I cringe trying a sponge.

HOWEVER, I'm open to a free sample to evaluate and give a detailed writeup.!

They're like 2 bucks at Lowe's. Get one and do the neighbor's car. :)

No, I'll go with a real sea-sponge first.

Nice post, hahahahha. I have a schmitt which doesn't work at all for me, and a detailers domain sponge from Phil which I really like. My favorite were my griots wool mitts, but they started falling apart and leaving fibers all over. Now I ordered two microfiber sponges from Chemical Guys for the spring, and I plan on ordering one of the merino wool mitts from Phil.

Now that I've got some, I keep coming back to the grout sponge. The size is "just right." I, too, was a non believer, so I did the tired old CD-R test. No scratches. They're great for ONR washes. And Stang is right - if you give it a bit of a squeeze, this great foamy soap comes out of it.

Another good one is the "Grecian Wonder Sponge," which I bought on closeout at Advance Auto for 50 cents each. I bought the last eight they had. They're good, but I like the grout sponge better.

My favorite? Having a customer ask me what I used to wash their car, and telling them, with a completely straight face, "oh, I used a grout sponge."

Last time I was at Lowe's, I couldn't help noticing that Pro Line has some larger versions of the same looking medium, over by the household cleaners. Next time I'm in there, I may check one out.

I actually have 2 kinds of proline sponges - grout sponge, and bone shaped sponge. I use them and like them both. Although they are not quite Zymol/uber sponge level, which I absolutely love, but hey, you can't loose for $2 a sponge!
I still have a couple of those, Nica, and absolutely love them! The softest sponge you can get!!!

Where do you guys get your sea sponges?

I've seen them in art supply stores like Michael's, but they all look too small to be used for detailing. I think they're for some sort of textured painting or something, and they're about the size of a tennis ball.
