I was wondering if this polisher would be a good beginner polisher this is the old griots garage polisher given to me by a relative that doesn't use it anymore I attached a pic below
That is the original Griot's Garage polisher . Not much power and it has a fixed backing plate. I would suggest spending your money on a better machine. Such as the New Griot's or a Porter Cable 7424 XP .
Call Griot's with the machine. With the new version you can change backing plates. They have a life time warranty and will probably give you a new one for free. They did that for some other people on a different forum.
Tell them that machine doesn't have great power anymore and that is the old version Griot's. Tell them the truth that you got it from a relative. They will respect that and treat you respectfully in return.
Other good random orbitals are the Meguiars G110V2 machine which is relatively inexpensive, and does a great job. The polisher you have in the picture is made by Shurhold, a company that sells boat detailing machines and products. Believe some Forums tried selling these Shurhold machines a few years ago, but then they just disappeared. Good luck with this ! Dan F
Stokdgs he has the old Griot's Garage V1 machine. The Shurhold is still around btw. It has been revamped. I think AG sells it now.
Thanks IOMCAMARO ! I was just thinking that this older Griot unit looks like the Shurhold polishers that I think PAC sold for a while. I even got to try one out - a newer version, and it seemed so small. My Boat Detailer friend brought it over, said to try it out, as he could never use it on a boat to clean gelcoat. It would die trying. He routinely kills the best rotary machines out there to totally polish out huge boats up here in Boatland. Told him the Shurhold polisher he loaned me was small probably good for getting into small places, but not ergonomically designed for my needs, compared to my old Meguiars G110V2. Dan F
I believe they might have got them made by Shurhold, but they have since switched to PC. Although they are not the exact same. Idk why? The Shurhold was meant for boats, but the company kills me when they say to use 9" pads with them. I crack up every time that I read it. There is no way that a DA will turn a 9" pad without being able to burn the paint. Just my opinion though.
IOMCAMARO - I didnt know that the newer Griot machine was made by PorterCable- it still has the same shape and colors as the Shurhold.. Hmmmmm.. Yeah, I don't see any Random Orbital being able to turn a 9" pad very fast ever. My Meguiars G110V2 is very happy to spin a 4" pad pretty nicely but when you start going up in pad sizes, it has more mass to overcome.. I never use anything as big as a 9" pad anyway, and if I were to invest in backing plate, pads, etc., I better be Detailing a lot of Airplanes, etc., to recoup the investment.. And I hate doing Airplanes ! They are so dang big !!!
The info that I have provided isn't set in stone about the whole PC thing. That is just what I have heard. The Shurhold is a dark red where as the Griot's is a bright orange. The picture doesn't do the color justice.
