Alright, so winter is finally here...first snow of the season! As soon as my Collinite 845 (Thanks Ken :thumb gets here and I actually have some free time, I'm gonna wash my GTI one last time before I go into "winter mode" where I pretty much don't clean it till spring because it gets too cold and I hate working in the cold. But I would like to strip off the last LSP that I used (Powerlock) so I have a clean slate to work with. It's supposed to be quite cold around here for the next few weeks though, too cold to wash the car outside so I'll be doing my first ONR wash in the garage. Is it safe to mix a bit of APC or Dawn dish soap in with the ONR to strip off the Powerlock? (And if so, how much would you recommend mixing? My current APC is Meguiar's.) I didn't know if mixing other stuff in with ONR would diminish its magical properties or not. Hopefully with the ONR I'll be able to wash it a few times this winter, nothing like having the only clean car on the road :afro: Thanks! Clark
i'd say just lay your collinite ontop of the powerlock, power lock is good to put underneath anyways or just clay the vehicle after ONR and then IPA wipedown instead of APC or dawn.
I would recommend a presoak with Power Clean 3:1 on each panel prior to the ONR wash rather than mixing APC "with" ONR. Just presoak the panel and allow it to dwell for a minute or so, then wash the panel as you normally would. You can presoak a panel ahead so that its ready as you go. I recommend an APC that is paint safe like Power Clean.
Do not put Collinite 845 over anything. It has strong solvents and will degrade the layer underneath it. You don't need PL and 845, just do two layers of 845 to ensure even coverage and call it a day. 845 lasts longer than PL anyway.
oh collinite has the eating away petroleums? :S a question tho, will the eating away cause different shades under the light?
I have no idea if it'll make it look different, but I'd assume it'll affect the longevity in some degree. A wax/sealant is only as strong as the stuff under it.
i would just ONR wash, clay, then do a few IPA wipedowns. then 2 coats of 845. no apc is really necessary.
Mkay, thanks for the advice! Now...I've been reading about IPA wipedowns lately...what exactly does that process entail? *EDIT* Alright, so I've been doing some poking around. Isopropyl alcohol and water, 1:1 correct? Just spray onto the paint and wipe off? Any other tips that you would recommend? Brands of isopropyl alcohol that you use...and can I just buy this at a local CVS/Walgreens? What section of the store would I even look in? Wow, I'm clueless haha. Thanks!
I just get the 90% IPA you find in the health and beauty section at any dept or drug store then mix 50:50.
Get 91% IPA from CVS and cut it with water 1:1. Spray it on and wipe down like a quick detailer, but be very generous with your sprays. If your protection is really strong, you may have to hit each panel 2-3 times until your LSP is gone.
Thanks everyone for the tips! I'd upload some pictures but my computer is so incredibly broken right now I can't believe it actually worked enough for me to get on the Internet. Anyway, I used ONR for the first time...and I loved it! I will definitely be using it more this winter. I didn't clay it since it's not been very long since I clayed it last, but I did do an IPA wipedown and then 2 coats of Collinite 845. So I'm set for the winter now! Clark
