Can someone explain to me what the advantage is of these products over clay. To remove paint contamination I have always used clay. I see alot of the top guys using this on paint and wanted to know why and what the advantage would be. I am getting ready to prep a new car I just purchased (hope to have it in a few days) and wonder if I need some of this? My plan was wash, clay, polish and seal paint and rims. Should I add the Iron X step before the clay? Thanks in advance for your advise.
This step can remove some of those surface contaminants that clay is used for. Thus it can save you time. Not only that, but clay is an abrasive (and some clay compounds can mar).
I also think you should seal the trim, if your going to hang on to this for vehicle for a long long time to come then you should definitely seal "everything". I used Aquartz on the underside of the hood, and on the engine trim bits. As for Iron removing products, I think they come in handy and especially on lighter coloured vehicles. I asked Phil I absolutely needed Iron cut to prep my White Accord for Aquartz application and he said not necessarily but it would be a good idea, since I had the time, I chose to do a deep claying instead, it took 3 hours with Meg's Aggressive, I could still see Iron filings around the bumper area. If I had Iron X it would have been way easier. Note* even new cars have quite a bit of iron particles stuck to them. It can make polishing easier because essentially your not making more work for your self
This discussion brings up another question... reports indicate Iron X is wretchedly stinky. Howzabout Iron Cut? Does it putrify the whole garage? Anyone use both? Are they comparable? TIA... TL
yes ironcut smells like sulfer and farts...pretty much like ironx...they are about the same in performance.
Your vehicle can benefit from Iron X, new or old! For removing Iron/metallic contaminates. I believe its a great product not only because it can cut your claying time but I think the main benefit is touching the paint less. The less you have to clay or wipe on a paint surface the better. It is smelly
It does smell absolutely horrendous but it won't stink up your garage as long as you keep it in a bottle with a lid or sprayer
I have managed to decontaminate only one new vehicle with Iron X just because it was special ordered and it didn't spend time in the factory yard/car lot. Iron-X only tackles iron particles and nothing else. IMO, these particles cause more marring than anything else, so I use Iron X before the clay. A lot of people use the clay before the Iron X, so it's a matter of personal preference.
another product worth looking at is Iron Cleanse do a search on youtube, This sprays on like a gel and reacts only with the Iron not a general reaction like most also as its a gel there is virtualy no run off and therefore you use a lot less product. It does not smell as bad but that is from the active ingredient. The benifit of these products is they remove Iron particles that have become embedded (etched)into the paintowrk. clay bar will only remove what is above the level of the paint but it will leave what is below.
What will decontamination remove that washing / clay will not? - http://www.autopia.org/forum/guide-...-decontamination-remove-washing-will-not.html
