Sadly, I am in the middle of a detail. I'm using it at speed 3 (1700 RPM) with M105 and DD uber orange pad. It's just shot up in speed for no real reason twice now. It's a Hitachi SP18VA. Should I just stop using it and get something else? [rant]Man, I just got M105 and M205 recently too. Just when I finished ONE section of the hood, this happens.[/rant]
Ooooh sorry to hear this, specially during a paint correction :scared: Do you have a hard ware store to pick up another rotary? So is the machine completely dead or is it still operating? What's the speed change when it happens? I mean does it go from 1,000RPM to 3,000RPM? Just wondering.
I'm sure there are plenty of hardware stores around San Francisco. It's operating fine, but I'm afraid it'll keep doing this. It shoots up from 1700 RPM to probably 3000+ RPM. From the sounds of it, I wouldn't be surprised if it's on its way to 6400 RPM which is the limit.
It's probably a quick fix if you send it in for service it's probably a bad resistor pack or bad rheostat. Are you thinking about buying another one?
i've been thinking of buying another one since i've read about all the problems that the hitachi has had with all its owners. I'm thinking of getting the Makita because it's so similar in every aspect.
I remember you PMd me on Autopia about the Hitachi that was for sale in the past. I'm surprised you stuck with it after the stuff you told me. I say demote this to spinning pads and pick up a Makita
Don't wait till it Completely Dies on you. You need a Back-up anyway.:crash: Shortly after you get a new one have your old one rebuilt
Everyone I knew does a lot more polishing than I do! That's why I kept with it. I've only done paint correction on about 20 cars in the past 2 years. I think I will be getting a Makita very soon though.
I have a Dynabrade which is built like a bloody tank. Replaceable brushes are about the only thing I expect to do on mine. Heavy, but very, very well built. consider it.
sorry richy, but i've picked up a makita 9227c. it was too familiar and priced right to pass on. comparing the hitachi and the makita... it is a lot quieter and the dial feels a lot more solid than the hitachi. i wish i had this from the start!
