It looks like a local Subaru/Mitsubishi performance shop wanted to contact me for detailing. I have been working with the owner for a little while and he asked me for a list of services and what price I would change him. I have a price I charge for specific detailing but I'm not sure what % I should knock off for him. On a $300 detail how much should he get an how much should I get?

    Any ideas? V

Would you be doing the work at your place using your materials and water or at his facility? I think how the overhead is split would make a big difference.

Should have been more clear. My equipment, my materials at their facility. So basically the clients would be theirs and I would just be doing the work representing them.

I'm not sure I can help you with the percentage, it is going to depend in large measure on how badly you want or need the additional work. I do, however, see some potential areas you need to get solidly nailed down in advance. To the best of my limited knowledge you would be right on the edge between being an independent contractor and an employee, especially if the shop is doing the scheduling. Any negative tax ramifications should fall on the shop so I think you're safe there but you could fall into a crack where both his insurance company and yours would try to pass it off on the other side if there was ever a customer claim. If a customer writes a bad check or otherwise stiffs the shop would you still get paid for the job immediately and not have to deal with any collections issues? Would you be getting any marketing bump out of this or would you be anonymous as far as the end customer is concerned?

I don't really need the money I just enjoy doing the work and it support buying mods for my STI. I get about 1-4 detailing jobs a month ( which is about all i want)by my self. I would also be recognized for doing the work. It would be move to have a shop to work in no matter the weather and to work on cars which I enjoy like STI and EVOs. Also because I get my STI work done at this shop it would be nice to have a relationship with them.

The shop is credit card and cash only. No checks so I'm not worried about bad checks.

An average of 10-15% is what it takes to get the client through the door. That is just an average. Maybe an extra 5-10% would be fair if the shop is not charging you rent. Do charge for the work, don't sell your work short. Sounds like you have a good opportunity and the shop likes your work.

I do work for a local high end car audio place. I charge their clients $50 / hr and the shop takes 20%. Their clients, their facility and I get paid before I leave.

^^^20% sounds about right. And there wouldn't be any problems with you being an independent contractor, you wouldn't be paid salary or hourly, just per job. This is how my buddy runs his lawn business and his people use all of his equipment.

At the body shop I currently work for, we receive 20-25% off all services we use. For example, all car parts from all dealerships, alignment shop, and re manufactured parts. We also have a contracted clear film person who gives the shop 10-20% off his total invoice. This should help you a bit of how things run, well at least for this particular shop.

Thanks for all the help guys. It seems like 20% is a good rule of thumb to use.
