I will be buying a Griots or a Porter Cable buffer but I haven't made up my mind yet, as to which one. I think the Griots is a better unit but is also more money. I don't detail for a living but I do a fare share of cars and I don't always want to use a rotary. I was thinking about getting both Griots units, the 6" and 3". What would be SOOOO nice is if the LSP manufactures would make their product containers a bit larger so that you could easily get a 6" DA pad in, while still attached to the buffer. Even if they made the container more shallow but wider, that'd be awesome. You could open the container of wax and with your DA in hand, you could set the pad into the product and blip the throttle to apply and you're off and running! No more messing around to get the LSP onto your pads!
Griots has a lifetime warranty and that made my decision easy. I also have the 3" machine and am thinking about selling it. I don't detail enough to have both machines, I just swap out the backing plate on the 6" when need be. If you are interested in getting a good price on the 3" let me know and I will sell you mine.
After using both, I prefer the Griots because having the off hand handle central to the machine allows me to control it better and apply more even pressure.
If you took a poll you'll find that probably 75-80% of people apply waxes by hand. Majority rules. You can always take the wax out of the tub and apply it to your pad.
I do apply by hand sometimes, but I have found, that for me, I get a more even coat by using a machine. I have a cheap 10 " orbital buffer with a foam bonnect that I have used to apply different LSPs, such as: Meguiars liquid #26, Meguiars NXT liquid, Liquid Glass and even Pinnacle XMT 180 paste (The cake comes out really easy) and I get a perfectly even coat each and every time.
I have both the GG6 and the GG3, and I love both to death. tooltopia has it on sale, link here: ToolTopia.com - Search I did a comparison test between the PCXP and the GG6 with a local detailer. the test spot was the face of a truck he was working on The GG6 was able to achieve the same level of correction with 6.5 inch pads and speed 5, while the PCXP with 6.5 inch pads needs speed 6.
