Hey guys don't know if this is the right place to post this but I am thinking of getting some Meguiars 16 oz. DA Microfiber Correction Compound and 16 oz. DA Microfiber Finishing Wax. I Have seen these products applied with the Meguiars polisher, but I am wondering, can I get these two products and just apply them with some microfiber pads or will I not get the same results as with using the polisher? I am trying to get rid of some swirl marks and light scratches. Thanks.

you are going to need a DA polisher to get the best results........

:( Does it have to be the DA polisher or can it be just any polisher? And if its the only one, were is the cheapest place to get one?

To clarify things. DA is short for Dual Action as it oscillates as opposed to a rotary polisher that simply rotates on one axis. Rotary polishers are better at correcting deep imperfections but require more delicate use as you can easy 'strike' through or burn the paint's clear coat causing damage. DAs are more beginner friendly but don't correct deep imperfections like a RO. This is why Meguiar's has introduced the DA microfiber system as it cuts like a RO but finishes nicely.

And as always, support forum sponsors such as Detailers Domain. Check out some kids on the following link; Phil has some Meguiar's DA kits ready to ship.

To answer your question - you don't need a particular DA brand or model. In fact, I believe you can use the MF DA system on a RO.

Thanks for the fast reply :) Being a total noob right now but what is an RO? Is this considered a RO, It's my really old one.

The kind of microfiber your thinking of, with regards to a hand pad, is very different than the microfiber used on the Meguiars cutting and finishing discs. The discs have very durable long nap fibers that are meant for polishing with a machine. Its not as if the pads are just microfiber towel material placed on foam backed discs, which I might add are the key to why the discs work so well. The thin and semi stiff foam backing allows the pads to glide atop the finish opposed to sinking into it, you can distribute even pressure very easily with those pads thanks to the backing hence why they correct very well, well, one of the reasons they correct so well.

And to simply answer your question, no. You will not get at all the same result doing this by hand opposed to a machine, not even close, and your arms may fall off before you get a chance to finish the whole car by hand trying to remove swirls. The machine to use would be a DA or as chaseme said a RO (random orbital) but you should not use it on a rotary/circular polisher.

You can use the D301 finishing polish/wax with a hand pad if you like, it works great and I have done it many times BUT this is only if you are using it simply to apply protection on the paint, you wont be actually final polishing the paint or removing defects with the D301 unless your using it with a machine. You can use foam buffing pads on a machine or the microfiber finishing discs to do this step, I actually prefer using a foam pad for it. I have tested it many ways and foam seems to produce the finer finish and is less aggressive on softer finishes. I also prefer a soft foam hand pad opposed to microfiber pads if you are applying the D301 by hand purely as a wax.

I imagine the picture you shared is a RO. Albeit, a very old and likely underpowered one. I've seen a similar type at Walmart or some big box type of retailer selling for around $30. If it actually does have enough power to do anything I wouldn't be surprised if it broke down while you use it. The only thing I would ever consider using that for would be to apply a wax/sealant (commonly referred to as LSP - Last Step Protection) as you need little pressure to spread an LSP. Another flaw will be finding pads to fit that machine and pad backing plate. The most common pad size is either 6" or 5.5" for most machine work. People use smaller pads for spot work or reaching in tight areas and they use larger pads for large panels.

Sir, your machine is set up for 10 inch pads only.

You cannot interchange the backing plate to the smallest size Meguiars microfiber kit which is a 6 inch diameter pad.

You may have to think about getting a different machine which will have the option of changing to different backing plate and microfiber pad sizes, so you can correctly use the Meguiars microfiber kit mentioned, sold by Phil here at Detailers Domain.

Good luck with your project !

Skip Walmart. To quote another forum member years and years ago on a different forum:

“Walmart's automotive department is the single biggest source of free entertainment I have found."

Needless to say, about 95% of their detailing section is full of junk.

A good start would be Detailersdomain.com, Phil will hook you up. Also there customer service is something you will not get at any of the "Big Box" stores you will find on the net. Shoot him an email and tell him what your looking for (in your case your looking for a DA to use with Meg's MF system) and he can advise you on what you need!
