    Up next was a:

    2008 Z06

Again another lovely vehicle with some nice curves as well.

First a little bit of history: With the new ZR-1 Corvette being released, there have been a large ammount of people who did not make the waiting list for the car. The local dealership began talking with our client, asking for a car they could direct these people to. This is the car that the conversation spawned. The car was towed off the dealer lot, and fully dismantled. The engine was pulled, and totally rewored with forged pistons, rods, and crank as well as ported heads added so as to lower compression ratio. They then added a twin-turbo setup, twin disk clutch, HRE rims and a katech hood. The car will lay down anything from 700-1000hp to the wheels depending on the boost. Anyways, moving on...:applause2:

Well this one was also in the shop and not very dirty at all just some dust and a few spots here and there, so we got ONR with grit guard out again and a way we went:

This bucket is quite lovely and very handy :thumb:

Well once the entire vehicle, wheel wells, rims and all was done it was time to clay the vehicle. To clay the vehicle we used our friend Ricardo Clay bar:

Now it was Mike’s turn to do the rims:

Again we used the Hollywood Metal Polish, good stuff.

We taped up the vehicle because we were eager to polish:

But as the taping of the vehicle was going on Carlos was taking paint gauge readings with the PosiTector 200 and gel:

Boy was he surprised to find the following:

This vehicle had some serious issues, Carlos was getting really odd readings ranging from as low as 37microns to as high as 480microns, the graph will show the inconsistency much better:

    As the graph shows

As the inspection of the vehicle continued we found a spot that looked as though someone had wet sanded too much on the edge:
If you look at where the finger is pointing to you’ll see the dark spot.

Due to it’s inconsistency we decided that we could not polish this vehicle, polishing with a finish pad and a very light product possible burn through the existing thin clear coat so we brought the owner over showed/explained to him what readings we were getting and made him aware of our finding. Customer was not pleased to say the least but he understood and we proceeded to the HD cleanse and removed the tape.

The entire vehicle was HD cleansed, one person applied the HD cleanse and the other two wiped it off right a way, making sure not to let it dry.

Then it was time to apply Ital by hand of course and removed with Cookie Monster towels:

Engine bay and interior were given a good wipe down and dressed as well, all leather was cleaned and treated and carpets vacuumed.

    Now for the end results:

Oh this is the custom katech hood I was talking about, not cheap, but it sure looked incredible.

The tires were dressed with Optimum Tire Shine

Well despite not being able to polish this vehicle it still turned out quite nice, hope you enjoyed the detail, we sure did. Feed back is always welcome

very nice....did you guys use lube with the 200adv? if you didnt that would explain the odd readings...

also do you always use single layer mode? I know some area,s were reading 50 microns but if you read the individual layers as the 200adv can do you may have found that a good % of that reading may of been a good level of clear coat enabling you to machine safely

very thin paint but a very healthy level of clearcoat

Its a performance tuner shop that I had an in with a few years back and have continued to do work for since. They do just about anything under the sun to any american muscle or trucks. supercharged vipers, corvettes, mustangs, turbo setups....you name it, they do it. I have to agree, its an awesome shop. Working among all of those vehicles is a BLAST! Just wait till they finish building their new one!!!:yikes:

All I have used from "hollywood" is the metal polish so I can't speak on behalf of anything else. The metal polish is great though.

Yeah, we were all extremely dissapointed that we weren't able to manhandle this beast.:shakehead: If the shop decides to keep the car instead of sell it back to the dealer we'll get our shot after its re-cleared, otherwise, I'll just have to settle for 06 version of this car this spring!:headbang:

We did use the lube with the 200. I'll have to ask Carlos(Nica) more about the settings, he's our paint gauge man. Having talked with the painter that did all the color matching up front though, he said with 1500 grit wetsand paper, two swipes and he was through the clear, so I have my suspicions it was just extremely thin clear.

Thanks Pirex!! Ital is a great wax, it looks nice, goes on and comes off extremely easy and its not expensive! Great all around wax.

Glad to see you like it!! I'll try and get some video of the car on the dyno and at the track this summer. If their 600wheel horse power car scared me i'm a litle nervous to see what this puppy will do!!:crasy:

Awesome car and you guys did some awesome work on it, even if you didn't get to polish. Man as good as it looks I'm scared to think how good it would have looked had you guys put the machines on it :yikes:!

That paint gauge paid for itself right there.
Makes me scared to put the polish to my GM vehicles without using one.

HeyJayplay, for the PosiTector 200 we used the gel that came with it and when I started taking readings and was getting odd numbers I thought to my self, that cant be right I must be doing something wrong so I used more lube and changed the settings just to double check my self and even then I was getting low, low readings.

I spent over and hour gauging the entire vehicle becuase I just couldn't beleave the readings I was getting, the odd thing is that on the other two vehicles we detailed there readings were more among the lines of 100 to 130microns.

I'm going to be phoning where I got the gauges and just ask some questions, actually Rich may be able to help me out as well but I'll do some reading and see what I can find out.

Jayplay if you got any tips I'd love to hear them buddy :peace:

Yea tell me about it, you know I was talking to a my friend Gerry (he's the one tha owns his own body shop) and he was telling me that the problem with the method vehicles are being pianted is that after putting the primer the rest of the coats of paint are not left to dry properly, so what he was telling me the industry does now is something like this:

    - First apply the primer, let that completely dry sand it down to level it off
    - Then apply the first coat of paint, let it sit for a bit then apply the second coat all depends on the make and model of the vehicle.
    - Then apply the clear coat.

The problem Gerry tells me is that there is not enough time for the paint to cure so even with the Advansed PosiTector 200 it would be useless becuase it can not read the different lawyers due to the way the paint is being applied or let cure. Rich confirmed this with me as well.

But yest there is a large learning curve with this machine, if I find more info I'll be more then happy to share it with you buddy..oh did you see the Pro section ;)

I had to take a double take but I recognized the shop. Nice to see that Steve is getting some good quality detailers in their. I had a supercharger installed by them in 2003 back when a 517rwhp car was fast. Well it still is fast, but the cars they are turning out now absolutely insane. Too bad about the paint readings.
