Detailing brush alternatives?

I've been holding off on purchasing some swissvax or similar brushes. Is there not a similar alternative brush that anyone uses from the world of art, as they do look very similar to some paintbrushes. I'm wondering if a nice paintbrush would do the same job as one of the swissvax brushes. Any suggestions?

 

My local distibutor sells a very similar brush for 6 bucks. I have also used paint brushes. Anything that has a Swissvax label you can rest assured you are getting butt raped :yikes:
