SO to the owners who have a D200. The Advanced models DO NOT work well in measuring the primer/paint/clearcoat? I have heard that from numerous people and they have all pointed to the standard model....
i find some times i have trouble reading the 3 individual layers but if i switch to 2 layers it still gives me a clearcoat reading which is what im after really so its a not a problem. its not the esiest gauge to learn either
Yes, I agree with Jayplay, the issue is on the method vehicle are painted. In order for the gauge to read the layers each layer needs to be left to cure and dry which is something bodyshops along with factory don't do now a days. Still though the gauge is very handy as I found out with the yellow Vett we did. The gauge has many features on it as well, you just need to play with it as much as possible, if you know what your doing and know what the readings are telling you the gauge is your bets friend but I got lots to learn still so please don't think I'm an expert on it as I'm barely scratching the surface on this gauge. Hope this helps.
Well I went with the base model becuase of the information Gerry (my friend who owns a body shop) shared with me, I can't remember the one that Jayplay has but by the sounds of it it's the Advanced one, not sure though. I'm quite pleased with the base model just my :2cents: though.
I have the adv model which reads 3 individual layers so is better.. you only really need to read 2 layers-the paint and clearcoat thickness, you can read the 3rd layer (Primer) but I dont really see the need- as long as we know the thickness of the laquer/top coat , we know how far we can polish down safely to remove the imperfections. As carlos has the standard model his only gives him one single reading of total thickness so you are unable to tell how much is actually clearcoat
