I'm curious if there is an easy way to identify differing paint types:
    Clear coat
    Single stage
    Etc

In the late 80's most car manufacturers stopped using Single stage paint and transitioned to a multiple step clear coat type paint system. This is easily differentiated from a single stage paint by looking to see if there is any transfer when using a polish.

Single stage paint will actually "rub" off onto your MF towel.

    Thanks Tim.

I guess I'll have to consider losing some towels and pads in a single-stage correction :(

You wont necessarily lose the supplies, it does wash out pretty good if you have good cleaners.

The pigment will wash out fine. It is really no difference in buffing BC/CC paints, except you dont see any pigment transfer because it is clear. Plus SS paints are my favorite to work on. They are usually very easy to correct and always look wetter and richer than BC/CC paints.

There are still manufacturers that use single stage(honda, mitsu, toyota, suzuki,...etc) paints though they are not the older single stage enamels but the new urethanes.
