So Costco is selling an LED bulb putting out 880 lumens or so that will fit in a standard size light socket. It is a large size bulb with 5 or 6 LEDs inside, shaped in a directional housing. I'm thinking about rigging up some sort of lighting apparatus to replace my 1000w halogen light setup because I burn through the filaments way too quickly.

The bulbs run about $40, but I am presuming they will last substantially longer than my halogen bulbs. Plus, they use much less energy and don't generate massive amounts of heat like halogens. I think if I slap two into bulb housings with metal surrounds and get them onto an adjustable height stand, I will be cookin' with gas...

My only real concern is that LEDs tend to be a much more focused light, so it might not provide as good of coverage as I am used to on a given panel.

What do you guys think? Anybody have this bulb?
btw, what do you think the lumen output is on a 1000w twin-bulb halogen setup?

Would include the link to this bulb, but I can't find it on costco's site, must be in-store only.

according to Wikipedia high wattage halogen bulb efficiency is about 25 lumens per watt of power, so your 1000W halogen set up is putting out about 25,000 lumens.
my 1200 lumen LED flash light works great for spotting defects but not as good as halogen

Cool to know, thanks for sharing that info.
On one hand, I like that halogen puts bright light onto such a big area, and on the other I like that LED puts such intense focused light in a targeted area. I guess you need both to really get the inspection done correctly.
I am surprised at the 25 lumen per watt stat, that is much higher than I thought. Interesting!
Not sure if the Costco bulb is worth the spend, but there is enough that I really don't like about halogen it makes me want to try the LED.

LED lighting is the future. I know you can get flourescent bulbs with LED lights in them so you don't have to change the ballast. You will see LED lights replace CFL's in the next 5 years as they are even more efficient and contain no nasty Mercury for disposal problems. We just need the price to come down on them.

I have a cree led bulb (about $100.00) that is a flood style in a work light reflector, and although it works well panel to panel, it is definitely not the solution I was looking for (yet).

it is also so heavy, that I find it hard to keep the angle adjustement wingnuts tight enough to hold it in the direction that I want it.

Richard from Blackwow may be working on an led solution. I read about it in the 540 detail he did and posted this last week.

I'll edit this post with specs...

Yes, my 12" CFL's! I have 4 of them in my garage as well. I plan on changing my flourescent bulbs to T-8's this summer.

    Thanks for all the responses!

Would be interesting to hear what Richard@blackwow is cooking up.

These high output LEDs are still too expensive for me, for now my mobile lighting needs will continue to be halogen.
