I am looking at getting the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens The lens is really sharp but in a very focused area and I am worried that when trying to show correction shots it could be a problem. I am worried that the bokeh while fantastic for a portrait of my godson could be a hindrance to a correction shot. Now to the questions..... :shead: 1. So does anyone own this lens and have any experience with it in shooting in a detailing setting, and if so how do you think it worked out? Got any pics? 2. Would I be better off going with another lens strictly for shooting correction and if so what would you guys/gals recommend? Thanks for the help.
I have a 50 f1.4. Its a nice lens but it is probably the least used lens I own. A major problem with it for me is that it just isn't sharp at 1.4. It needs to be stopped down to around f2.0 to get sharp on my copy. Also, I find that 50mm on a crop camera body (like my 1.6x crop 20D) is just a bit long. I like 35mm on a crop body much better. 35mm winds up more like a 50mm standard lens on a regular SLR. I'm not sure what attributes would make for a good lens\ to shoot correction with. I haven't really tried to shoot many paint flaws yet.
Thanks Brian I actually found a guy at work that has this lens and is going to bring it in on Friday to let me play with it over the weekend. I'll get to find out if I like it or not before I drop the dough on it anyway.
Chris, Not sure where your from, but at some camera stores they will let you "rent" lenses to test them out! Hope to hear your review!
i had the 1.8 before upgrading to the 1.4. the lack of a USM in the 1.8 really killed the lens for me, it spent more time hunting for focus than taking pictures. the 1.4 is alot faster and captures the moment alot better even though the lens isnt perfect. admitting 1.4 isnt as sharp as i'd like, it's not too bad and stepping it up to just 1.8 make it alot sharper and its still way faster than the 50 1.8 ver. the build just cant be compared. im kinda rambling haha, but if u've tried a 50mm prime, or shot in the 50mm range and find the range is suited for u, then the 1.4 is a great lens. but ya, to some 50 is a bit long so its hard to say if its "right" for u
He's bringing the lens in today but I'm oncall until 1 am tonight . I actually don't have a detail lined up this weekend but pretty sure I can wrangle up something even if it's just on a test panel. Have a beautiful M45 with a bad dealer prep coming in next Friday so I'll see what's what. Either way pics will be had. icture:
Sorry about pics being so late my best friend just had a baby so I've been busy between 2 jobs and going to check the little rugrat out. anyway here's a few random pics with the 50mm 1 of the kid and his dad and a couple of some paint. Only defect I have on my car ATM is a touchup paint blob that I am going to be wetsanding down so there is a pic of that plus a pic of another part of my hood just for fun. As for the 50mm1.4 I just haven't had enough time on it to say either way I'll be doing some 50/50's on a test panel tomorrow and will post those. Edit not sure what happened must be the way picasa authenticates picture profiles I could see them but I have rehosted them so we'll see.
updated pics with new hosting. I'll get some more up as soon as I can. I do have to say the 50mm is probably not the lens for the car but it is awesome for low light indoor stuff. The pics of the car were shot in the garage with very low lighting conditions. Here's the info on it Exposure Time: 1/49 sec. Aperture Value: 2.00 EV (f/2.0) ISO Speed Rating: 800 Flash Fired: Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode. Metering Mode: Pattern Exposure Program: Aperture priority Focal Length: 50.0 mm
Thanks. And yeah he is a pretty cute kid, he's really mello to which is nice he just started opening his eyes today and looking around it's kinda cool.
