So I was on a site the other day, clicked a link to watch a video and my computer was never the same. I Have Windows XP. Now I have a little red circle with a white "X" in it, down in the right bottom corner. (By the time, volume....) When I run the mouse over it, it just says "ERROR". When I click it, it sends me to a website (www.windcodecpro.com) It occasionally pops up a warning saying my Codec is corrupt and needs updating. Or it will say unable to play audio/video, or Fatal Error, unable to play "so and so", or Warning, your media codec is out of date, click here to update", and a few other warnings at various times. ALSO..... My font goes from normal, to extremely HUGE after a few minutes of being on the computer. I tried to go to display options, but the tab for fixing it is not there anymore, just a tab for the screen saver. This happened the same time the codec problem started. I have Norton 360 installed and running. It shows no viruses or worms. Also ran a registry cleaner with no luck. Any help would be appreciated. I looked at "add/remove Programs" to see if there are any that I do not recognize, which I was clueless to say the least. So here I sit, unable to use any program to play my music or vids, with enormously large text. Like I am looking through a magnifying glass.
You have an Active X bug. Go to start/programs/accessories/system restore and set your system back to the day before you watched the video. That should clear things up. If not, let me know.
Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, it did not work. I tried several restore points, and it kept saying my computer cannot be restored to that date. So tried a few more with no luck.
Dang Pete, I got my list from you! You sent me a virus with those midget and 500 pound, busty beauty sites..... dang you
OK, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete at the same time and tell me what's running... yup, I need to know everything.
Task Manager may give you a bunch of applications you do not recognize. Process Explorer v11.33 will give you a better idea of what is running.
Right-click taskbar, select Task Manager, select processes tab. ALSO, click start, select Run..., in Open : box type MSCONFIG, click OK. In the System Configuration Utility Window select the Startup tab. In the Command column look for any items that run from a TEMP folder, look for items you do not recognize, post your results. Basically Clever Nickname and I are trying to help you through Hijack This without sending you to that site.
MSCONFIG will show the path. Also Process Explorer is really much more informative than Task Manager. It will detail exactly what each process is, what it is doing, where it is running from and the description.
I deleted my antivirus that I "DID HAVE", and bought and downloaded Norton 360 today to see if it would do anything. I downloaded it from the internet. How can I go abouts to get it back? UPDATE. I finally found a restore point and it worked. It is finally gone. That was not fun.
You should have a customer number in your confirmation e-mail. Go to the Symantec site and you can get one more download (and probably only one) so make sure you save the file. Make sure you delete all files in your Internet temp file and your system temp directory or it will be back.
