    Hey guys,

I just recently purchased a 7424. I was hoping it could help me with some of my eye sores with my paint job. My fenders were repainted by the previous owners and they did a very bad job.

It looks like they simpily painted over the fender with out sanding/prepping. Now I the clear coat/paint is chipping off, revealing second layer for clear/paint.

Do you guys think it will be possible to sand down and use a polish to bring back the shine?

My inspiration came from this thread.

Looks like clearcoat chippage. My 2000 Lincoln LS has that as well, I'm really not sure how to fix it. Wetsanding maybe? More input will come hopefully.

You're looking at clear coat failure. The only way to fix it is to bring it to a body shop...Thats a respray...

Like all things id detailing the finish is correct surface preparation and the use of the correct product.

Plastic (as well as the above) requires an 'acid' type paint that will etch / bond and a finish paint that contains plasticizers

I really would like to wait until after winter before getting my fenders resprayed. In the mean time is it possible to try to help i tlook a bit better?

Would it still do nothing if I were to sand it down very closely to the 2nd layer and polish it?

btw, it seems like there is sitll clear coat under the chipping layer. It's still very glossy and smooth.

It could be the paint coat that you're seeing. Do you see paint transferring to your pad?

I guess it could be but it's definitely convincing me that its another clear coat under there.

It's very smooth and has a gloss to it.

I haven't even used my PC yet. I just purchased it and still need to buy pads.

What pad would you recommend using after sanding with 1500 gritt sand paper?

also, what kind of polish? I have 3M rubbing compound, will do anything?
