As everyone knows, Canadian prices suck, so while I was in the states yesterday, I dropped by Wal-Mart to pick up some cheap microfibre towels to do the dirty work that I don't want to do with my plush Werkstat towels. $5 for 8 decent sized microfibres, can't complain.

Today my girlfriend comes home after work and hands me a "white board restore pad" she got for free which is basically a microfibre towel. She said it feels like those towels I bought and thought I might want it. The packaging says helps restore whiteboards and chalkboards without scratching or damaging. I'm guessing its because its a microfibre and can pick up more. Doesn't feel like there are any embedded chemicals in the towel. I grabbed my new Wal-Mart towels and compared the two.... Feels the same...

Read the label, the Wal-Mart towels are 80% polyester, and 20% polyamide
The white board towels are labeled 70% polyester and 30% polyamide.

Now that perks me.... What is the difference from the two different blends? And what does each material do to the towel?

70/30 are just a bit softer in my experience...but again, it depends on a brand...

The biggest problem with Canadian pricing on microfibers is the duties that are added at the border. Any item that is not manufactured in the USA has duties added at time of import into Canada. The microfibers are either made in Korea or China and are subjected to up to 20% duties. This is whether CG ships direct or your buddy Joe in the US ships it to you. If you carry it across the border as items within your Duty Free limit then no duties of taxes are added.

If you check regular prices on Microfibers in the USA and compare to Canadian you will see that they usually within 5 - 10% in otherwords Canadian resellers are making less profit than a USA reller would be.

Remember anything that is purchased from the USA and shipped will be sujected to any applicable duty and Canadian taxes, not to mention the brokerage fees that the carrier or broker is adding on top of everything at least $5 - $40(couriers). You will also get a few percent added to your Visa/MC during the conversion as well, usually around 3% on top of the current exchange rate

In Canada we really get hosed on importing IMO

Micro fibre came about by combining two DuPont inventions: a hydrophobic Polyester (a scrubbing fibre) and a hydrophilic Polyamide (an absorbing fibre) this nylon hybrid is created during weaving to create microscopic loops, which form a network of tiny hooks, scrubbing away dirt and grime. The nature of this yarn is that it is an absorbent; the reason polyester appears to absorb liquids is the many thousands of micro fibres that collectively encapsulate liquids.

They are available in different ratios i.e. a 70% polyester/30% polyamide (or 80/20%) The polyamide is used as the core of the hybrid fibre and the polyester is the outer skin. Each micro fibre towel contains approx 50,000 for an average micro fibre towel and up to 200,000 fibres per square inch for a plush micro fibre towel that trap dirt and remove it from the surface. Each fibre has specific qualities, that when properly blended, can be used to weave functionally specific fabrics by varying nap length and / or densities.

it would make me happier if USD would go back up and CAD to go back down along with housing prices. Cost of living up here is $$$

I agree, the cost of living has rocketed in the last 5 years but wages have remained basically the same.

Thanks guys for helping with my curiosity. I know it probably really doesn't make much difference, I hope curiosity doesn't kill me, like it did to the cat :applause2:

I don't care about the exchange rates that much, but boy do I wish tuition fees would come down.
