I was at local Walmart yesterday, I saw new Castrol Edge motor oil. $34 for 5 quart jug...lasts 1 year or 15k miles, kinda like Mobil 1 Extended performance.
Anybody using this oil yet? It's more expensive then Mobil 1 extended performance, I'm currently using Castrol Syntec in Acura and Infiniti, while BMW is still gets serviced at the dealership. I'm using synthetic oil in all my cars, and not planning on switching back.
Castrol Syntec by the way is $22 for 5 quart jug...
Just wondering if it is worth to switch? It kinda scares me to run oil for 15k miles, but on another hand I'm already doing that on BMW, which again uses more oil.

    what do you think?

It has been discussed a lot at the big oil forum.

Given where I live (not that cold in winter, no towing, etc) and the lack of a real problem to solve (engines rarely have oil related issues -- mostly design ones if there is an issue), I will continue to use a regular synthetic or synthetic blend and change the oil every 7.5k especially since the engines are in warranty.

I am sure we will be forced to longer OCI for environmental reasons but I will wait until then. I watch for sales at parts places and stock up rather than buy when I need it.

I run full synthetic and it gets changed 3-5k miles. I'd never let my oil go to 15k no matter what it was but that's just me.

my daily driver gets its oil changed every 7000-7500 miles, ever since I switched to synthetic, I was doing 3000 miles on Castrol GTX before, but ever since they bumped up the price on regular oil, I switched to synthetic, as it is cheaper to operate...Owner'a manual says 3000 for sever conditions, 7500 for regular...There is no way I'm running regular oil for 7500 miles, it overboils and turns into greese. My Acura runs on Synthetic too, but different viscosity (5w-20), but I was changing it twice as often as it requires (has a sensor that monitors it)...maybe I should just switch to Castrol Edge and let it run for full 7000-7500 miles...

how do you think i feel when every bmw that comes in my work bay for a oil service .. Repair history states last oil change was 12k miles ago ... i hate BMW for doing that .. it just doesnt sound right .. i dont care what they put in the oil

instead of 4 quarts it takes 8...maybe that's one of the reasons...you hate BMW because it steals your business with fewer oil changes???

I always change my oil every 3 months or 3k miles. regardless.

These new oils have less ZDDP content for engines that use tighter tolerances, but its not efficient because over time the lack of this ZDDP content will plague newer engines due to the newer metallurgy.

ZDDP additives are sold at local parts stores, and have been proven to increase and engines' performance. Because im a performance oriented person.

Your Filter's will die in about 8000 miles of filtration though

what kind of oil are you using, and what kinda od vehicle is it? Do you tow?

I think it depends on a filter. If you use Fram generic, then yes, of course, I've been using Fram x2 for daily driver, which suppose to last 7k miles for sure, and K&N or Mobil 1 in Acura.

Many owners have sent their filters to Blackstone 10,000 has been the max And I never want to push a filter that hard; 8500 would be the max

I'd say Fram is of the lower tier, Wix and Purolater make the better filters.

Fram is OK, if you change your oil every 3000 miles, or Fram X2 for 7000...

Fram is about as bad as filters get, I did a couple of makeshift can opener tests once. Its construction even is sub=par.

Fram is not OK. Cut one apart and you will see why......

no no i dont hate them cause of that .. i just cant justify how long that oil is in there .. and your theory with more oil makes sense to me too

I have seen the pics as of late but used them for years. I never had an issue. I have had seen few real substantiated complaints that Fram has caused any issues. I know it is may be disconcerting but practically I do not think there is any real issue since it is all based upon seeing the tear down pictures. Personally, I now use Motorcraft or Purolator since I have a Ford product.

I use mobil 1 oil/filter in my infiniti and change it every 6 months. I only drive on the weekends, so I have vey low miles. I just make sure that I drive it far enough on the weekends to burn off any water.

The only oils I will use is either Mobil-1 full synthetic or Royal Purple.

There is no way in hell I would change my oil every 7500 that is way to long and I do not care what oil it is.Depending on how much traffic you sit in The longest I would go is 5000.My honda runs mobil 1 and I change it every 3000 in the summer because I sit in 2 to 4 hours of traffic in the afternoon and the oil is rough looking at 3000.
