On the back of the "cleaning your MF cloths" thread. I spoke to someone who has started distributing a named brand MF cloth. He said to me that he was told, that the best way to bring the fluffy'ness back to your MF cloth is to boil it. Just pop it on the stove, in a pot with water and boil it up.:gasp: Anyone else here ever hear about doing this?
The boiling works well to get out stuff that hasn't been removed from wash cycles. Wax residues and what have you. Usually it's not a common occurrence to have to boil your towels. As Duratys said toss in some distilled white vinegar into the second rinse cycle this will help remove extra residue as well as left over soaps.
Allow Micro fibre towels to boil for twenty (20) minutes (ensure that water does not fully evaporate) you will find that more wax / polish residue comes out even after a towel has been thoroughly washed. Empty out the water and then remove the towel, don't do it the other way or you'll re-introduce debris to the towel again. Micro-Restore is the only detergent formulated for maintaining and restoring micro fibre, it’s a concentrated detergent designed to clean, pamper and extend the life of micro fibre cloths.
Blody hell, how come I never thought of that...boiling my mocrofiber towels..sweet I'm going to try it :thumb:
Be careful with this, guys, I remember a thread on the topia' where a guy nearly had a house fire when he did this. Always be in the kitchen while the MFs are boiling.
Just did it tonight. Used some Soverign MF detergent. I can say this. DON'T mix colours. I had yellow and blue. Now it's green and blue. When it was done boiling, I threw them in the clothes washer (after running a load of just HOT water in it.) That was to rinse them and spin dry them. Then into the dryer on normal heat. (My dryer has a moisture sensor. I set it for less than normal, but they were too damp for my taste. So I adjusted it to normal dry)
We talking a gas range? I used a lid on my pot. Bringing 4 gallons to boil will take a while and you want a lid on it to keep your house from feeling like a sauna.
They felt fine, Here was a test I did also. Into that pot I threw 2 extremely small MF's I use to clean my glasses with. If you wear glasses, these are the type you get from your optromitist. The test was to see if after spritzing my glasses if I had streaking. I use to if they were washed in the washing machine. Not this time. Might have been that I've learned not to use a fabric softener. I would suggest if you use your washing machine to run a load of nothing thru it with as hot of water as you can to remove any built up softener in it. But I'm satisfied with my towels now.
Well you gotta use at least a little common sense whether you're cooking spaghetti or boiling MF's. The reason that person almost started a fire was he left the MF's on the stove boiling, went upstairs to check on a puppy, checked e-mails, got sleepy, fell asleep, etc.. I believe the first time I heard about boiling MF's was back in 2005 when a vendor posted this in reply to WW towels not being as absorbent anymore: "I have heard this situation a variety of times, and after personally speaking with a major MF Manufacturer in Korea, they have advised people to boil thier MF for 10 minutes. I know this sounds crazy, but somehow or another, your fibers have gotten clogged up.........." I haven't had that problem yet but I wash mine in hot water, use Micro-Restore detergent, run at least 2 rinse cycles and put ~1/2 cup of vinegar in the first rinse cycle. If I ever do have that problem I wouldn't hesitate to try boiling.
Yeah, I don't think anyone would be that inept. I honestly have no need to boil my MFs at this point, I honestly think some of my WWs absorb water better now than they did when they were new (over a year ago).
I have done this before as a test on my "grunge" towels. A lot came out, I was quite surprised. But even with my biggest pot, you can only put so many towels in there. What you need is a huge spaghetti pot!!!
I did this last year... my towels were not as soft as they once were and I was about to demote them to non paint duty... It worked well and they are still paint worthy
yep..i read that thread but he put the towels on the stove and forgot about the pan..MF's absorb water fast be sure to keep a close eye on'em if you try this..
