Today’s detail is on a very nice E90 320D MSport in Metallic blue that belongs to a good friend of mine. Just before I started this I managed to get a complete range of the new Meguair’s DA Microfiber paint restoration range to try out. It has been designed specifically for the DA to give excellent levels of correction in a reduced time rivelling that of a rotary. The kit consists of 2 parts correction and Finishing with a single pad type and polish combination in sizes of 6”, 5.5” and 3.5”. the pads are similar in make up with the cutting one being thinner and more coarse in the fibre make up than the polishing one. I thought well if its going to be tested no point on doing it on something easy so this BMW is the perfect project.
For this, the owner specified that he wanted a Zaino finish so after polishing, it was IPA wiped down to leave the surface ready for Zaino. Also as it was a customer car some marks were removed using the rotary as it was the first time using this system and I had to give a level of finish that was expected in a tight timeframe so it helped speed thing up this time.
The car was booked in for a 2 day correction detail with a view to removing as much as possible in that time.
    So onto the car.

The method of correction is to spread an even amount of product over the pad and it was applied using speed 4-5 on a Megs G220v1 with a medium pressure and worked until the product went clear.

Boot lid. This panel suffered from very Deep RDS. I have shown the correction achieved after a few passes simply to show the level of correction that was achieved using this method. They were later delt with by rotary simply as it’s a customers car and I did not want to experiment with something unknown. Later I found I need not have worried as on test panels it easily coped with 3000 wet and dry sanding marks and leaves a very nice finish.

The red dot is a laser pointer to allow me to measure paint depth during correction. In total 4 microns were removed to achieve a nearly flawless finish in a relatively short space of time.

It is required to blow the pad with an air line after every set simply as it can clog slightly. I do admit I was over loading the pad in the beginning as I had no reference on how to use it. Later with less product being applied, the clogging issue disappeared.

Even without a tape line to show the level of correction achieved is easy to see.

    Well for my conclusions:

Do I like the Meguiar’s new Microfibre system????
In a word. Yes!!! I feel it is a big step forward in effective and “safe” car correction. I personally feel that Meguiars is quite possibly one of the best paint enhancing systems I have tested. On BMW paint it handled the defects with ease. As I became more confident in its ability I was able to remove deeper marks as shown in the pictures. There is very little heat build up, it works quickly and easily and is a lot safer to use than a rotary that’s for sure. I found the fact the pads were very thin I was chopping and changing pads on difficult or contoured areas but that’s only a small issue and vibration on bumpers (just part and parcel of using a DA) frustrated me and I changed to the rotary for some areas. Since doing this detail I have found myself using it for the main body of the correction work and then using the rotary for finishing. Funny its like going full circle lol!!

I hope you enjoyed reading this detail and as usual all C&C are very welcome.

    Many thanks,
    Rollo.

This is a huge help Ronnie. Now I know what to expect with the MF system I have yet to use.

    Great work.

many thanks guys Really love this system and it is so easy to use thats for sure. I still use the rotary for finishing and stubborn marks and thats it. NOW MEGS just develop a gel handle for the G220 and it will be great

did you use the MF pads on the pillars too?? Is the process any different from the painted surfaces?

no with the pillars I used the rotary and a 3.5" spot pad as its more controlled. process is the same as if working with plastics softly and slowly take your time and dont rush it.

Good job on the detail, lots of deep Rids on that truck removed. I have a 328i in Black to work on soon, any advice? I currently only own a Flex 3401 and the car is not in good shape.

believe it or not this will remove most marks pretty easily with no real issues. then megs 105 should sort the reat out then refine. Scholl concepts is another good product for removing deep marks easily as well. they are time consuming to take your time and dont rush it I find is best with black cars.
