BMW $800 "polymer coating".....

So I just talked to my brother-in-law. His neighbor just bought a BMW and paid $800 to have them coat it with some polymer that "goes on aircraft to prevent dirt from sticking". They put it on the rims and everything and gave him a 10 year guarantee of no scratches and no "un-removable dirt".

Has anyone else heard about this? I can't stand how dealerships can get away with stuff like this.

All the money that I spend on products, I would think my stuff is better than dealership products. Wish I could charge $800 to put something like Cquartz on a car.

    Thanks

Why not charge $800 the dealer is doing it I would go $400 and call it a day ; )

We charged $350-450 for Aquartz /Opticoat....but that doesn't include paint correction.

When a dealership charges for such a service, they are betting against the odds that the customer will come back and complain. They don't necessarily have to believe it.

Holy crap Phil! You are one hell of a salesman! Can you share a few of the keywords that bring in the customers that pay that for a 50 dollar coating?

I'm all about charging the big bucks for quality work/products. But do you think BMW is using something as quality of a product as Aquartz?

it wasn't that hard David at Optimum told me to charge $350 and add for paint correction, so that what I did.

most of my customers are asking for coating now. Whether its Aquartz or Opti Coat.

I've been washing a few new BMWs and noticed they are using something that really sheds water well. It acts a lot like nano sealants, not like Opticoat. I was going to do a correction on one, and tried to strip it........it held up great! APC over and over was the only thing, other than polishing that got it to come off.

The reason the stealerships can charge that, is that they just roll it into the payments so its "cheap" for the client at that time, when we charge them 1/2 that amount it comes directly out of the cash in their pockets........the later seems to much harder for them.

    Cheers,
    GREG

The $800 does not sound so bad if you are able to get 10 years of paint correction out of it. I would just go in once a year, complain about the hair line scratches, have them re-finish and re-seal and then wait another 12 months.

that is a fair price........Considering most people understand the amount of time and labor that goes into the application, as well as if their is a mistake the person installing it will fix it, versus them trying to do it.

"if it was that easy, everyone would be doing it" right?

Add that to the "value" perceived that this will protect their corrected paint far longer then anything else, then it is well worth it in the consumers mind. Also, many people if told "this is the best" will desire that far more often then not.

How do explain the coating to clients and how long do you tell them it will last? I have 4 clients that I only see once a year and this may be the ticket for them, just not sure how to explain it to them.

1/2 the customer that have put the coating on asked for it so that was easy.
as for the other 1/2 they are customers that I qualify.

I asked them if they have time to take care of their cars, if they say no I suggest a coating. I usually tell them up to 1 year protection.

    Simply put.

When I bought my wifes LR3 the salesman (who knew nothing about cars) tried to sell me on a $750 "coating" that allows me to NEVER have to wax the car.

    Incredible huh?

I have a client that has a pretty nice collection of cars (GT3, 599 GTB, 427 Cobra and 2 Benz Black Series AMG Coupes). I'm thinking I might talk him into OptiCoat on the two Black Series, they are pretty messed up right now as we have not been able to corect them yet. Once I do, I think OptiCoat would be a good fit for those cars to help keep them looking good.

Now only if I can charge $800 for just the coating service.
