Best Detail thread ever, in my opinion

In all honesty i would agree with you, it really is an amazing thread.....sometimes wish i had 200 hours to work on a car lol

 

Insane amount of time and attention to detail. Time and time again, these UK boys have got it pat down.

 

agreed, I don't think there's a spot on the car they did not touch.

 

I have to confess I've not read it yet, but Kelly and his team are certainly setting the bar extremely high indeed.

 

I seen some amazing details, but this one takes the cake...

 

Stunning... I agree with prism. I wish I had no time constraints when working on a customer's car to make it PERFECT. Although some of that stuff was not just detailing.

Thanks for the post, I enjoyed reading that. I can appreciate all the effort that went in to not only detailing that car, but putting together that thread. Makes me think I should start taking the time to post more pics of my work.

 

I loved both this detail and Todd's he does amazing work and that F40 came out amazing and it was 60 hrs compared to this 200 hr detail.

60 hours on a single stage 20+ year old paint job that is so thin in areas you can see the kevlar weave (my father's F40 has multiple spots where the red paint thins out noticeably near the panel edges/curves hence why ive never attempted to correct it - and that's the factory finish) vs 200 hours on modern clear coat including repainting on mostly flat panels

i dont want to take anything away from that detail, ive seen quite a few of those UK guys' details on DW and they are unsung superstars, but ive corrected my dad's yellow Murci and i was still smiling at the end of it.....but the F40, seeing how thin and uneven the non-clear coated paint is across a small 2x2 section is enough to scare me away from even using a paint cleaner with micro abbrassives

so my vote is stiil with Todd's, and ive asked him to detail it if he ever ventured to Aus

 

He does go international of course at the customers expense, and your dad has a F40 my god must be nice. I wish I had something that nice.

 

Very impressive work. I just don't understand how someone who owns that car who clearly doesnt take good care of it at all chooses to get it detailed to such a high calibre.

Also I wonder what the bill was, assume at least $75/hr x200hrs plus whatever the refurb work cost???

 

You can see the kevlar/carbon weave through the paint of most every F40 and even F50's as well. Thin paint is tough to work on from a safety standpoint but single stage finishes actually clean up very nicely and have unbelievable gloss when refinished properly.

Credit to KDS on the Murci because while it is a modern finish it happens to be one of the hardest clears out there. The speed and pressure needed to remove even minor defects from metallic lambo paint takes forever, and this car has some severe defects! Aside from thin paint F40's I would probably choose any single stage finish to do correction on opposed to a ridiculously hard modern clear like lamborghini's have.

Finally someone else that can maybe see things the way I do. Simply because you can see the 'weave' does not indicate anything other than the substrate is not smooth.

Can you see the thickness of the paint on a smooth metal panel? If someone told you they could you'd think they were a fool, unless you were the bigger fool to believe them that is! Here is a photo of mine of a carbon fibre bonnet and it wasn't on the thin side by any stretch of the imagination.



So what's the difference if someone told you they could see the thickness of the paint on a textured panel like CF or CK..?

ps. Kelly (KDS) doesn't charge for every hour that he puts into cars and almost always goes beyond the call of duty. Not great business sense I know, but from what I've read and know he's all about the passion. Definitely the type of guy you want working on your car though.
