Wow that looks aweful. Really sorry to hear that. Sorry I can't be of any help since I have never used those types of backing plates before.

Send that pic to CG, I am sure they will send you a replacement because that is just nasty looking. Or better yet, ask for your money back and buy a Lake Country backing plate that is supposedly much stronger from what I have heard.

I've seen that happen with the foam ones. I only use the solid rubber ones from LC on my PC.

I have the same one but haven't been able to give mine a spine yet (3.5" for rotary) I'll be watching this thread closely and definitely update if something happens to mine

my backing plate that come with my first pc from years ago is still running strong lol.

just found this on there site

Chemical Guys Dual-Action Flexible Backing Plates minimize heat transfer, while it flexes just enough to contour to your autos bends curves. These backing plates are built tough(sure they are lol) and even carry a 1 Yr warrant. Ideal for use with Porter Cable 7424 Dual-Action Polisher or Chemical Guys Heavy Hitter DA

I would believe its the foam heating up as you apply pressure and then simply getting to the point that its at its melting temp. Flexing is a bad thing when you're applying pressure, more wiggle room, more heat.

honestly I was only using really light pressure def not enough to make it flex. but i see what your saying

i also think the fact that its oscillating is also increasing its flexing. It would probably flex less on a rotary.

Here's an older backing plate I have that my dad gave me as a gift. I used it back in the day into a drill to buff headlights.

I don't know the tread on a PC, but if it's the same as this backing plate, you should DEFINITELY get it. It's super durable and I am not telling you that as some sales pitch. It was used in bodyshop application for a long time, and still looks brand new. It's one piece like the rotary backing plates without those wimpy screws that hold the thin plate that bonds to the soft part of the BP like your Chemical Guys backing plate.

Ok so the PC 7424 DOES have the same tread 5/16 so it will work with the backing plate I am talking about. I highly recommend it.

it will work man. the pc has the same thread. I was a little surprised when my dad first gave it to me since I have never heard of it.... but it's waaaaay nicer then the majority of the cheap backing plates you see for sale.

I finally placed an order for the 3M Perfect it III 5" backing plate. I am having it imported from the UK from Elite Car Care. My Chemical Guys Evolve 4R 5" backing plate that was for my Makita, that I bought in place of the 3M due to price took the crapper on me on my last paint correction using it on the PC with my Rotary to DA adapter I got with my DD 3" backing plate. It basically was going to do what your did but I stope before it got to that point. So I decided to step it up and get what the pros use cant wait to try it out, I hope the foam is more giving than the CG was, I sure it will be though
