I live in West Hollywood, CA, and no matter where I move to, I get noise complaints whenever I do a detail. Apparently my Makita drives people nuts. What's everyone's take on this? Do you guys ever get complaints where you are? Should I quiet down or tell the people complaining to take a walk?
I've got a 400 Watt stereo in my garage...what polisher noise??? Especially when Godsmack is kicking out. Seriously, I've run my polisher until all hours of the night and it's not that loud. Sounds like they're over-reacting.
I guess I should have mentioned I live in an apt. complex in a tightly packed residential area, and I do my work in an open air parking bay.
No complaints here and my hoa is super strict. I have washed cars outside with the garage door open with the radio cranked as late as 1 am and as early as 5 am. I guess I don't have tattle tails as neighbors.
When I first started, my neighbour complained to the city and they forced me to move into a shop instead of working out of my garage.
dude ive gotten complaints about everything noise, your blocking me, your waking up my wife, you start too early, you cant park there. i am so sick in tired of it this is what i do i talk to them just like they talk to me if they come at me rude i'll tell them to f@%k off as long as i dont start before 7am im not breaking the law. i learned you cant make everyone happy and theres always gonna be rude people in this world but i will no longer let people talk down to me and belittle me. now if they come to me in a nice way i will at least try to do what i can
yeah i think the law in Los Angeles County is no work before 7am and nothing after 10pm M-F. my neighbor is the biggest prick in the world. he calls for us leaving a trailer in the drive way. mind you my fucking trailer in my fucking drive way!! i told him last time, if you have a problem, talk to me man to man. dont go hiding behind the police or city, even the cops told him to quit being a dick. they said they are ignoring any further complaints because it has gotten excessive and i am not in violation of any laws. so last time he parked his unregistered car on the street i drove to the corner where i know cops hang out and found one. i told him man this dude just abandoned an unregistered car down the street. the cop said he would check it out. when i got back from the store i found my neighbor fighting with the cop who was calling a tow truck!! LOL people like that are unhappy and need to make others as unhappy. i refuse to be unhappy. so i wave and say hi neighbor as loud as i can when i see him.
:lol2::lol2::lol2::lol2::lol2: DUDE, this is just funny, I cannot help. I laughed so hard, I almost farted... Seriously. Imagine that car actually getting towed, and then stored for like a month, and then that crazy owner would have to pay that bill...:yikes:
What do you guys make of subsection (b): SEC. 112.04. POWERED EQUIPMENT INTENDED FOR REPETITIVE USE IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS AND OTHER MACHINERY, EQUIPMENT, AND DEVICES. (Title and Section Amended by Ord. No. 161,574, Eff 9/8/86.) (a)Between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. of the following day, no person shall operate any lawn mower, backpack blower, lawn edger, riding tractor, or any other machinery, equipment, or other mechanical or electrical device, or any hand tool which creates a loud, raucous or impulsive sound, within any residential zone or within 500 feet of a residence. (b) Except as to the equipment and operations specifically mentioned and related elsewhere in this Chapter or for emergency work as that-term is defined in Section 111.01(d), and except as to aircraft, tow tractors, aircraft auxiliary power units, trains and motor vehicles in their respective operations governed by State or federal regulations, no person shall operate or cause to be operated any machinery, equipment, tools, or other mechanical or electrical device, or engage in any other activity in such manner as to create any noise which would cause the noise level on the premises of any other occupied property, or, if a condominium, apartment house, duplex, or attached business, within any adjoining unit, to exceed the ambient noise level by more than five (5) decibels. (c) (Added by Ord. No. 171,440, Eff. 1/17/97.) Notwithstanding the provisions of Subsection (a) above, no gas powered blower shall be used within 500 feet of a residence at anytime after July 1, 1997 with the exception of leaf vacuum devices which operate at a sound level not to exceed 45 dB(A). Both the user of such a blower as well as the employer of such user, if any, shall be subject to the requirements of and penalty provisions for this ordinance.
Also, this: The following is a list of Los Angeles Municipal Code (LAMC) sections of the Noise Ordinance and a summary of the elements that constitute a violation: 114.01 LAMC- Vehicle Repair ▪ Engaging in the repair or rebuilding of a motor vehicle; ▪ In a residential zone or within 500 feet thereof; ▪ Between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 8: 00 a.m.; ▪ Audible to the human ear at a distance in excess of 150 feet from the property line of the noise source; ▪ In a manner which causes discomfort or annoyance to a reasonable person of normal sensitiveness residing in the area.
I remember when I moved into my old house and was detailing a car in the garage with the door cracked just a little with the music pretty loud. I heard a loud banging noise on the door. So I opened it up and this guy started yelling at me. The music is to loud, I can hear your buffer, blah blah blah. I told him this was the reason I bought a house with a garage and if he didn't like it he was more than welcome to come in and try to turn it down himself . As he was leaving someone in the house happened to turn it louder (not sure who that was). I know I was well within my rights and there wasn't any thing he could to do about it. If he would of approached me in a more respective manner than I might of been more inclined to have turned it down.
this means dont detail at night foo LOL unless you are in a business district that is 500ft away from a residential area. when i had my shop we worked day and night and the cops never bothered me. shit they would stop off and use the bathroom if they saw the doors open. i think they mean engine as in the motor of your car. probably for eco reasons. like oil and coolant being disposed of properly
I was detailing a friend's car the other day and the "building code inspector" of West Hollywood told me I can't perform any "commercial" activity in a residential district. I can only clean my own car from now on.
That last sentence is WICKED, made me laugh, exactly what I would do! If other are pissed off, and you're very nice to them, they get even more riled up! It's amazing!
Quick question again for everyone, how would I handle the accusation of conducting business in a residential district?
Are you running an official business? Or just cash under the table type? If it's the latter, they got nothin on you. You are cleaning a buddy's car for free as far as they know.
sooner or later they will get you for it. if they are that hell bent on getting your polisher shut off. i would just move.
