Anybody flip cars currently or in the past? Just curious, because I did one when I was 19 and made decent money. Now that I'm detailing for awhile I feel like I have an edge making the car sell faster and for more money. Please discuss.
Cousin does, but then again he has good resources (mooching off my uncles body shop) he has access to dealer auctions, and minor repairs if need be. He Currently bought a 2000 civic for $1500 locally. I would be interested but there's some risk and I don't have $$$ to play with being a student. I won't mind hearing others.
My brother-in-law does. Deals with Exotics which actually is easier to move as there's less competition and doesn't suffer from as quickly a year to year depreciation once it hits it's sweet spot years. It's also easier for him to move vehicles owning a motorsports shop though. Gets them cheap, fixes them up a bit at his shop, drives them for fun, parks them out front to drive in more business, and flips them for tiddy profit making $5-10+ K per car.
I would like to. And I feel as I have a big edge as well being a detailer and all. I also know to post large, clean photos, list the right features, etc. I was thinking about doing either newer Mustangs or Toyota pickus.
I think if I do it again ill probably start with cheap cars to build up separate funds. I know 4 cyl hondas and toyotas will always sell especially with todays gas prices. I think the key to profits is to buy dirt cheap and make minimal repairs and maybe do a one step polish and sell high. Sent from my Ally using Tapatalk

depends I bought my 2004 Jetta TDI Sport Edition, so it has sunroof, the sports seats out of the wolfsburg 3 spoke steering wheel and came with different wheels for $10,000 with only 137,000kms which is nothing, I buffed out and cleaned it up clayed waxed etc and everyones asking me what year it is because it looks brand new . I could easily sell it for $14,000-15,000 The thing is alot of TDI's are neglected and not cared for often very dirty and in need of some love, often times they have rusty fenders because of some sound deadning but this is covered under vw's 12 year warranty, my car will be going in to get fixed sometime soon
I've always wanted a Jetta tdi. Mainly for my wife, she drives 40 miles round trip to work and we take her car for anything else as well. I visited one of the tdi forums a long time ago and the people on there trying to hyperemile these cars get crazy good mileage. For that reason alone, I agree they will be in demand.
Although good luck finding a used TDI. There might be one here and there that'll pop up, but most people who buy a TDI, buy them for the long run as diesel engines will laugh at 100k miles. Buyers know they won't get value for them due to premium markup and diesel gas prices unless you drive them high mileage for several years, so no one is looking to sell after a few years. I tried finding one for almost a year before giving up and buying one new. And yes, they are amazing vehicles....I'm getting 46mpg without really hypermiling. TDI owners laugh at Prius drivers as they pull away with their amazing torque.
Look into your state's laws. Many states want to classify you as a "dealer" if you buy and sell "too many cars".
i though about tdi. then did calculations and it ends up not being that economical. in europe it is couse diesel costs less then gas. if you calculate gas car with 40mpg(civic and some others) and tdi that does about 50mpg on highway). cost per mile ends up being very close
I was interested in doing this... I even went ahead and took the Car dealer license course here in FL... All i need to do it secure a location and i can open up shop...
