Yet another air compressor deal. This one is warm but not killer. I've noticed that two of my local Walmarts (Nashville area) are clearing out several air compressor models. Three caught my eyes.

The first is a cheapie 12V car compressor. This is one of those trunk emergency deals. It was $10, now $7. Nothing great but better than nothing if you have a flat (or need to inflate the spare because you didn't check it before leaving on that 300 mile trip :O

The next two are "Brute by Briggs and Stratton" compressors.

Both have the same oil lubed direct drive pump. If they are like every direct drive oil lubed compressor I've used they aren't much if any quieter than the oil free compressors but they typically are fine with continuous use. Most (all?) oil free compressors are rated only for intermittent use. 4.2 CFM @ 90 psi is about standard for this type of pump. This flow rate combined with the 10-15 gallon tanks should make this thing just fine for impact wrenches. Air grinders would be OK with intermittent use.

For $99 the 10 gallon model is an OK deal. HF typically has an 8 gallon horizontal model on sale with similar specs for the same $100. The $100 price is actually just the old regular price (yes I like tool shopping). Anyway, it's a good price but nothing too special.

The 15 gallon @ $154 is a bit better. The extra air is nice as it gives you a bit more air before the pump has to kick on. More importantly this one includes air tools. It includes a ~250 ft-lb impact wrench (typically worth about $20), an air ratchet (probably worth $20) and the obligatory yellow coil hose, tire chuck, air gun, and air connectors. Walmart sells a yellow hose, chuck, air gun, connectors set for about $20. Basically for $50 you get a small deal on the tools plus an extra 5 gallons of air.

Personally I think the 1/4" ID yellow hose is great for tires and for the air gun. It probably works well with the air ratchet but with the impact wrench it likely restricts air flow a bit too much. It will work but a second 3/8" hose wouldn't be bad and would make a difference with the impact wrench. I have both a 3/8" 50ft hose and a 1/4" 25ft hose. My impact wrench seems to run faster (and thus presumably harder) with the 3/8" hose.

What's my point? The impact wrench, hose and ratchet are basically starter tools. The wrench is low on torque and the coil hose restricts air flow with higher flow tools. Still, if I didn't have any air tools already, I would pay the extra $50 for 50% more tank volume.

Walmart also had a 20 gallon oil free compressor marked down from $200 to $154. I don't think it came with any accessories. This looks like the model (same compressor housing) but I think it was marked Ironforce or some other rebrand name.

Not a smoking deal but not bad. As this is clearance you mileage may vary.
