Just a quick update. I've got a few hours into this now and all is going well. Had to remove 110 microns in one spot to remove one LARGE piece of something. Area still has 285 microns left! Heres one quick 50/50 to keep you interested.
I have a Defelsko DFT but should have got the DFT Combo as it reads on metal and aluminum. Mine only reads on metal. The Highline is quite a bit less money and is apparently very accurate but I don't know if it reads on metal substrates.
wow ken, looks amazing! what sander are you using? i just got a new mirka DA sander at work and it rocks. looking forward to the rest of this one!
Where did you get the Mirka and how much? If the owner is happy with this one, the shop that painted it will be using me to sand all their cars.
honestly i have no idea how much it cost. i ordered it through one of the body shop distributors at work. came with this little mini airbuffer too, which is kinda cool for getting at weird areas like front and rear lower air ducts on porsches. i doubt it was a bargain, but well worth it IMO. the thing is light as hell. EDIT: these are the ones http://www.mirka-usa.com/sander_5.html http://www.mirka-usa.com/buffer_30.html
Here are a couple pics from today. So far I'm into it for around 13 hours and I'm nowhere near done. Looks like its gonna come in around 30-40 hours.
Just a reflection. It looks like its very common in north America to finish off with a 2000 grit. In Sweden, almost everyone is finishing off with 4000 grit.
I've noticed that and the reason being is that its sooooo much easier to polish out. When I finish with my 3000#, I can almost polish it out with a finishing polish. 4000 grit would also leave the finish insanely smooth and reflective I imagine. Damn, now I have to get some and try it.
Great work Ken!!! Hm, yeah I suppose finishing at 2000 is fine but if you can finish at 3000 or even 4000, I'm sure it would make polishing paint a lot easier.
