Okay, I'm a little torn between these products because I'm sure they're both great. I have some PO85RD, but I am dying to try some Ultrafine. It is ridiculously expensive though!

From what I've read, Ultrafine has a shorter working time (awesome), and PO85RD is glossier. I'm curious as to how much glossier it is.

Is it glossy enough to ditch PO85RD all together?

I really dislike PO85RD's extremely long working time. How does it compare to Ultrafine's?

Ultrafine also comes in a cool bottle.

PO85RD has a lame bottle. I had to buy another bottle that fit my preference for how much polish I wanted on my pads later, haha.

Any insight would be greatly helpful to me, and I may be selling my PO85RD soon. I do have a lot left which is why I am thinking of making a switch. I'd rather not have both because they seem similar in use. Thanks in advance!

You will be very happy with UF. It is super easy to use and the gloss is just as nice if not better. Just look at my show and shines, that is all I use for my final polishing. My gallons of 85rd have sat on the shelf since I started using UF when it first came out. I take it you found it in the new purple bottle with the blue top.

I haven't used my PO85RD yet but I have used UF quite a bit and the usual consensus is that UF is more versatile and has a little more "cutting" power than PO85RD.

Actually it is just the opposite.

Gotta love the ease of use with Fina. Throw a glaze on Fina and your rockin!

Is the Ultrafine of which you guys are speaking a US product, or a UK product? I did an Imola Red BMW today, and finished with PO85RD. I thought I was gonna be there all week working that stuff. I mean, the look it gives is hard to argue with, but maybe there's a better way to get it...

I wish I knew more about the 3M line than I do. I've spent so many hours memorizing Menzerna's impossible naming conventions that I'm not sure I have any brain left to process the 3M names.

From what I've read, there is no difference between UK and US products. I dislike PO85RD's work time so much that I am willing to pass on 75% of the looks for an easier product to use.

Thats weird that you say that about 85RD. PO85RD for me is the only polish out of the SIP/106/203/85RD progression that I KNOW when its finished. I now hate SIP cuz it acts so strange sometimes, and 106FA unless its via DA has a super confusing guess how-far-its-finished-out look to it. I look forward to using 85RD because of how long SIP and 106FA can sometimes take.

UK UF and UK UF are the same, the other compounds/polishes are not the same from what i have read and the UK products are better than the US counterparts.

Hmm, so with the lower working time of UF I wonder if it would be better to use with a DA than using 85rd on a DA? Anyone use UF on a da and have a opinion?

I may have to give one of my dad's friends who runs a warehouse for body shops a call and see if I can go down there this weekend and get a bottle of UF. hmm..

Karl there is no difference. I have both versions. The only thing you need to remember from 3M is the Extra-cut compound and the Ultrafine.

SpecC the good thing about going from 85rd to UF is that you are not going to give up any looks.

I never have but the consensus between most is working time is VERY long with UF. Also consider that its made to be used and works the best at that 1000-1800-1000 RPM protocol for a rotary. I have used 85RD via PC and its great. Considering how mild a combo that would be, stick to 85RD if youre using a DA..

Can you elaborate on the protocol? I usually use PO85RD around 1100 and just work it until it's done. I'll go a little faster with 4" pads, but I'd still finish around 1100.

Im sorry, I meant the 1k- 1800- 1k was for UF. Its pretty straight forward aside from you need to learn the amount to use and youre supposed to remove while still wet. Basically spread and work a few passes at 1000 bump to 1800 - some more passes- then reduce back and finish with a couple at 1000 then just remove.

85RD I personally alot of the time like to spread it at 1100 work it a couple passes then bump to either 1300 or 1500 work it a bit more then JUST as it starts to begin to work down, I lower my speed to 1300 until done then maybe 1 or 2 passes at 1100 with just the weight of the machine. I really like 85RD at 13-1500 RPM.

I guess everybody's different. I use 203 more than anything else, and have its working time figured out pretty well. 85RD, compared to 203, seems to go on and on and on. Sometimes I stop the machine and run my finger across the polish, because I just can't believe it's still going. I'm all for long working times, but 85RD does seem a bit too much of a good thing. To me.

"Down there" as in somewhere in Raleigh/Durham?

Thanks Dana, that's a big help. I know you use and like the 3M line, and that's a big reason I've been considering it.

I modified your post slightly.

Karl, down there as in Charlotte...sorry about that...his son actually got a job at a warehouse somewhere in Raleigh but do not know if he has moved into that position yet. I am going to have to see what strings I can pull and maybe snag a bottle when I got to clt this weekend.

Its so weird how some polishes work COMPLETELY different from one person to the next given approximately the same use and same amount during use.

I literally laughed out loud when I read your edit to my post. :)
