I have been thinking about getting a 3M Sun Gun. Do you guys feel it's worth the money or is there something just as good for less???

Gary...the sun gun is the best..I do not have one..but have played with it at the body shop a friend works at....and I compared it to a brinkman I have..the 3M shows minute stuff where the brinkman does not....its the almighty of swirl detectors .....check your PM's

I checked one out today as well. Took it out to the wife's pollen covered then rained on BMW. I could see some light RIDS in a few areas that I did not notice before. Its actually very light weight as well. Just not sure if its worth $300 to me?

Infratech Color Matcher CM5300 is what I use and bought it for $149.00. compared it to the sun gun and I have to say that mine is way better. m2c Only negative is that the cm5300 is not cordless.

Thomas, how much brighter is the CM5300 then a pair of 500watt halogens?

    TIA!

Thanks a lot for your comments guys. I have been thinking about one for a while but I have not pulled the trigger because they are so expensive. It seems every time I'm applying a wax or sealant after polsihing I find some light scratch I missed. It's always missed due the lighting even through I do go over the car well with the halogens looking at all kinds of angles. I have a couple of sets of halogens I use but still miss some real light mark some where most of the time. Sometimes I'll stop and pull the polisher back out and other times I don't feel like it and tell myself I'll get it next time. I guess most of us are really obsessive if we worry about some very light swirl mark you can only see at the right angle with and right lighting and even then have to really be looking for it. Is this worth spending another $300-$400 for a light??? I guess that's what I'm trying to decide. If all my forum brothers tell me it is then I guess it will make the decision easier.

To be honest Gary I would have to agree with Al, the 3M Sun Gun is truly one of the best lights you can have when detailing. Like you said we are all obsesed about perfection and well this light will truly expose all the imperfections you can't see with the regular lights.

The nice thing with the 3M Sun Gun is that you never have to worry about seeing micro marring by an angle, you just turn it on and right a way it will show you all the flaws on the surface. Also I remember when I ordered my 3M Sun Gun I was actually going to cancell the order becuase I had doubts about the machine but figured I'll just give it a try, well I tried it and I've happy ever since. There is no way I can go back to the Brinkman, I still use the traditonal tripod lights and well the large amounts of lights in my garage and all but the 3M Sun Gun still plays a very important role during inspection of the paint.

I took some pictures of how the 3M Sun Gun compares to the Brinkman:

I'm sure you can tell which is which

The Sun Gun to me is like the 3m backing plates, M5's, bespoke suits, bespoke shoes.

Its not necessary, its over priced, but damn does it make life that much better.

I don't think I'd compare them to a pair of 500w halogens. You still need both. Just like with the sun gun.

Just curious tdekany, you say the CM5300 is better in which way is it better? I'm just curious that's all. Hope you don't mind me asking :peace:

Not at all. The CM has 2 light bulbs - much more bright. I will take some pictures next week of both in action.

Sweet, yea I remember seeing the two lights and I assumed that it would spread the light around better but again that's just an assumption. Oh but I thought the two lights combined is what gave this system it's brightness...mmm...I'm not explaining my self correctly here...um...:shead: I can't remember correctly but I tought that it needed both lights to make it the equivalent as the 3M Sun Gun

Look forward to some pictures in action :thumb:

    Where did you hear that?

While I wish that mine was cordless and I'd love a sun gun, from whar I've seen mine seems much brighter. BUT, we will see when I do the comparison. I may eat my own words.
