2006 VW GTI MkV Detail So, here is the detail I did over the weekend, 3 days, this is the first time using my ne Flex 3403 rotary polisher and I will say it was great. Had some hiccups but I think all in all I would call it successful. Foaming: CG Maxi-Suds + CG Strong Wash Wheel Cleaning: Diablo Claying Car was not that contaminated so clay was pretty clean at the end of it. Foamed up the car with some CG Maxi-Suds + MS SGS to clean away the coating ONR puts down so the tape could stick to the paint properly Defects/Marring/Scratches Nice scratch running down passenger side door: Hood had some nice pitting/water etching and swirled pretty bad, note that after washing I did not dry 100% so the light areas you see is just some water left that dried a bit or some Menz Top Inspection Polishing Paint Thickness: Min: 97 microns Avg: 110 microns Max: 119 microns I had good amount of clear still left to work with Taped up the car getting it ready for some correction work. 50/50: Menzerana PowerFinish/Uber Green (1100-1300-1100 rpms) Taking a little break, my little "studio" LOL Me @ work....look at that concentration, car looks almost pink/purple haha Mirrors getting polished (LC White/Power Finish) Look at the nice CF weave Time to stop for the day, putting her to bed.... Next day starting right back up, front fender..this is after Menz PowerFinish/3m UK Yellow, used 3m pad as it was better at the tighter curves on the front fender...ended up having to use some M105/Uber Yellow due to heavier marring 4 small dots of PF for a small section at a time after the pad was primed Remember that nice scratch on the passenger door? Well wet sanded using some 2500 grit paper and then cut with M105/3m wool pad ahhh, that is better wiping off polish, how did that dust get on the glass! I had my taillight tinted while back and the clear was pretty orange pealed so I decided it was time to take care of that: Little sanding, 1500 to knock down the large bits, then some 2000 to get it nice and smooth.... Yes, i did fix those few spots that are not smooth.... mmm...much better! That was all for day, next morning got up and dusted off the car getting it ready for some finishing and making it POP! Finishing tools that were used: Already getting a nice reflection on the good, but had to make it better! After finishing polishing, you can see there is still some small pitting, I thought about sanding but when looking at them under 10x and 15x loop some went deep and did not want to dive into that right now... Cleaning the pad with a Megs triple duty brush, GREAT pad cleaning brush....always work with clean pads! GI EVP Pad Prime, great stuff! Really helps polishes not dust up, extended work time a bit, and helps keep things moving smoothly After doing little finishing work, thought they looked pretty good... That was a lot of tape, haha... nice crisp reflection LSP Final wipe-down with some Menzerna Top Inspection to remove oils, GI EVP Prime leaves behind some oil so wanted to remove that even thought I was going to use a pre-wax cleaner Time to get some SV CF out: After CF Pic, I think CF did add something to the finish... Now, its time for some wax , SV Insignis with a BF gold finger applicator... Time to buff off the wax, gotta double fist it! After one coat of Insignis: Giving my approval....maybe not of my picture taking skills, haha. Water Beading shots, on the hood of the car: Water was moving fast, those beads were moving I tell yeah...the two pics were taken right after another..which bead will win!!!! Another shot, with little more water sprayed, nice tight, round beads. Glass Polishing and Sealing Glass Polishing, LC Glass Pad with 1z Glas Polish Sealing side windows with some Opti-Seal: Cleaned all plastic trim with 1z Deep Plastic Cleaner, this stuff is great! Used Megs new Ultimate Protectant on all the trim. Initial option is that this stuff is pretty good, it is a thick lotion, really makes black plastic darker but not a greasy look. Now durability is up in the air so I will see how long it last Left side got some UP, kind of went over to the other side of the tape, oopsy, but can tell the difference of were the tape was Exhaust Tips Tips were polished with Opt Metal Polish (Great stuff, my favorite metal polish!) and some #0000 steel wool. I cleaned them best I could but as they are not coated they get dirty fast and almost a lost cause. Tire Dressing Used my favorite tire dressing, ShowroomFX (was Tripi-Care) White Pearl. Only tire dressing I will use, and I have tried a lot, great look and last a long time for being water based. Pictures made it look a little glossy but is a nice matte/satin look. Rubber Seals All door seals got some 1z Gummi Pflege, applied it using a 1" foam brush. The tip of the Gummi I find rips easily and cant get smooth application always so I just pop them off now and put little on the brush. Find it easier this way. Put another coat of Insignis on that night, then put her to bed. Interior detail will be this week, I hope. Final Shots Final shots, she is wearing 2 coats of Insignis and everything is nicely dressed... Yes, I cleaned that little bit of polish, haha... THE END! Thanks for reading, looking at the pics, I know it was long but thought if I was going to do a write up of the first time using a rotary might as will detail out everything. Sorry I didn't have more pics of the polishing and defects, I took some but could not get them to come out clear... Feel free to comment, ask questions, or anything else!
Looks great! I love how red POPS! I can't wait to pull my nice car out for the summer and give it the first detail of the year...
That's quite the write up, wow, fantastic work my friend! Stunning that Insignis is, and what beading. PS: I think the finger applicator is making you use too much I think!
I would just tap the applicator on the wax top and hardly any would come on, it seemed like only solvent came on the pad? I tried a uber red applicator, one you used, and same issue. I would get some on but after spreading the pad had some wax layer/flakes that were dry almost like the solvent was sucked out. I have talked to Ketil about it, he is looking into it and asking SV.
Very nice work and write up car does look spankin Couple of questions - clay lube (10 ml #00) what is that ? - glass polish from enzett what does that do for the windshield? - opti-seal for side windows again what for ? Last where did you buy the carbon VW trunk release would look good on My MKVI TIA
Thanks! Glad you liked it Justin. Glad you enjoyed it and picked up a few tricks. That is favorite part of reading write-ups is learning new little tricks. Cant wait to see the pics from your detail! Yes, that red did pop. Thanks, glad you enjoyed it....it was fun to write up haha...at one point i got lost in what pictures were being posed and had to fix it all up...
10 mL of #00, it is Megs High Tech Car Wash. It is a very high lubrication car wash, actually made for wet sanding, put a few drops in your water bucket for better lubrication on wet sanding. Read someone using it and added a bit then being a engineering and all I had to have a exact amount and settled on 10 mL for 25oz of solution. 1z Glas polish is just a fine polish to clean up the glass of road grime and film that regular glass cleaner can not get off. Really helps when putting down a glass sealant so it can bond properly, but even if you are not it really cleans the glass very well and makes it really clear and clean. Opti-Seal on side windows just to help prevent a little water spotting as water will run off better, also helps clean them down the road a bit. CF trunk, I just poped off the VW badge and put down some 3m DI-NOC CF vinyl under it and then put the badge back on. The 3m vinyl looks very real, very close to dry CF look. Love it, even did my phone back in it.
Thanks for all that schooling I have already spent close to 600 bucks this month buying detail stuff. now for more shit :waiting:this site is going to make me broke and living in my garage.:duh:
wow nice work man. Wet sanding and everything was done. Looks like you had a long haul ahead and you tackled it with great results. By the way i have that same tripod LoL. So, what kind of camera and stuff are you using as your pictures came out pretty crisp.
haha, trust me I know how it is when you see a lot of new things and want them. Plus you can live in the garage with all your detailing stuff Thanks, I think it came out pretty good haha.. Used a Sony DSC-T30 point and shoot camera, nothing special. Thanks man! There is a guy on the golfmkv forums that does tail, that is who did mine. I was one of his first customers, he does ALOT better job at sanding and polishing them after I told him what he should do.
really awesome work ankeet, your car came out GREAT. where did you get the 5" ultrafina pads from? hopefully i can give mine some lovin this weekend since the weather is FINALLY clearing up and its going to be warm out.
Thanks Billy. My GTI was not getting enough lovin so I had to give it some extra this time around. I hope tomm or Thursday I can do the inside and make it look as good as the exterior, haha. PM sent about the pads...They are 6" pads btw.
Ankeet, I enjoyed every bit of this detail. Your write up is simply phenomenal! I see I'm not the only one adding Megs #00 high tech wash to ONR clay lube mix, and I love that clay lube! I see yuo have german licence plate, that remind me that I have one too, and it needs to go on a BMW. I've been eye balling Insignis for a while already, you are teasing me with those beading shots...
Thanks, you where the one who turned me to adding some in...but I had to have a optimum amount of #00 so after a few different amounts I came up with the formula I posed being the best, or how I like it at least. Insignis is great wax, looks are great, nice durability, and beading/sheeting really last! Thanks, Ty.
